    Good Evening Lane Families,

Happy New Year! It was wonderful to see your students back in classes today, as we return to our regular CDL schedule. I hope that you have been able to have a safe and enjoyable holiday season with all of the challenges that we face. Here are a couple of announcements.

COVID-19 Awareness Event Focused in the African American/Black/African Communities: Friday, January 8

In collaboration with OHA, Multnomah County Public Health, and Department of County Human Services, District 2 is sponsoring an event in the African American/Black/African communities to bring COVID-19 awareness, safety and health education, Vaccination readiness conversations, Vaccination education/Q&A, and Resource sharing via a culturally affirming community engagement forum January 8, 2021. The hope expressed in this partnership is to help with assuaging concerns about the vaccination, creating open forums for transparent communication and building trust. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit BIPOC communities hardest and real effort is needed to help reduce the spread and trajectory of the virus in Multnomah County. Please see this flyer for more information.

    October 6, 2020

    Dear Lane Families,

I am writing to let you know that a hate speech incident occurred during a live online class session today. An unidentified person entered an 8th grade Language Arts class with their camera off. They called the teacher by her first name and then repeated a racist word several times. The teacher quickly ejected this person from the session, stopping any further interaction and then held a brief discussion with her class which focused on the importance of keeping her classroom safe for everyone and rejecting hate speech as destructive to her learning community. In addition to communicating with our community about this incident and continuing our social justice focus as a school, we will be joining students in their next class session to address this incident directly and provide support to students.

I want to join Ms. McGrath in restating our commitment to ensuring that all students are treated with respect at Lane Middle School and experience a safe, supportive and positive learning environment. Hate is not tolerated nor accepted in our community. This incident is an affront to our core values of Racial Equity and Social Justice, Respect, Honesty and Integrity. We value and respect everyone in our school community and understand that our diversity makes us stronger.  We believe that Black lives matter at Lane Middle School and encourage our community to embody our statement of inclusivity, which reads:

At Lane, we stand together with others to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and with kindness, honoring all races, genders, gender expressions, sexual orientations, cultures, religions, family histories, and national origins.

Please take some time to discuss these values with your student and join us in standing against hate in our community. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns relating to this or any other matter.
    Sincerely,

    Michael Rowell, Principal
    Lane Middle School

    September 28, 2020

    Good Evening Lane Families,

As we move into the middle of the first quarter of the school year, I would like to encourage you to support your students by setting aside daily time for independent reading. Spending time with a good book is a great way to relax, explore the world and share the experiences of others, while also building strong reading skills, which are a key to success in school and beyond. You'll find information about how students can pick up library books they've placed on hold below. Daily practice is the key to becoming a strong reader!

    Back to School Night

Thank you to everyone who stuck with us last Thursday night for Back to School Night. Not even nationwide Google server crashes can keep our school down! Many of you may have been unable to return to our program, and we want to be sure to connect with you. Please take some time to meet us and learn about our school at this site. Many thanks to our amazing staff who created a welcoming evening program online and who were unflinching in staying with the program, even in the face of internet interruptions.

    Library Book Distribution

Beginning tomorrow, the Lane library will be open for book "holds" distribution. On Mondays and Tuesdays going forward, the external backdoor of the library will be open from 11:00 AM-5:30 PM -- students, guardians, and parents are welcome to come pick up books that have been checked out to Lane students. Students will place holds for books they want to read online -- once they become available they will be notified to come pick them up. More information will be available to students in their Language Arts classes. Any books that need to be returned to Lane or other PPS libraries may be returned at the same time. We will be following COVID-19 safety protocols for both people and materials. For updates, please contact Ms. Raspone at sraspone@pps.net or visit the library's website.

Distribution of Reading Books, Band Instruments and other Materials

I will send a follow up message tomorrow, sharing when we will be at school distributing materials for those who weren't able to pick up books and band instruments last week.

    August 18, 2020

    Dear Lane Families,

We are excited to begin a new school year and are working hard to plan a strong Distance Learning program for your students. While we were able to engage nearly all students in online learning activities in the spring, we are focused on increasing the rigor and effectiveness of our instruction. We can't wait to get started!

School Starts September 2 for 6th Grade Students, September 3 for All Students

The first two weeks of school will be designed to ease into our virtual start of the school year. Our teachers will focus on creating online classroom learning communities grounded in social emotional learning and racial equity conversations. This soft start will also give us time to make sure our online learning systems are working and that teachers, students and families have time to get comfortable with the digital tools.

I know we are all anxious to have a better understanding of the daily schedule for this fall. Middle schools across PPS are working together to create common expectations to ensure that all students receive an engaging and rigorous educational experience regardless of their school site. Those plans will be released soon and I will be able to provide more specific information to Lane students and families at that time. I will also share information about picking up course schedules and school supplies.

Submit a Free and Reduced-price Meal Application

    • Families can now submit a new meal application for the 2020-21 school year.
    • Families who do not meet the 2020-21 Federal Income Guideline may qualify using the 2020-21 Oregon Expanded Income Guidelines. The State of Oregon has increased the income guidelines for free meal eligibility in the 2020-21 school year from 185% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) to 300% of FPL. Please go to the PPS Nutrition Services website for more information.

    Staff Changes

There have been several changes in our school team over the summer. I would like to send heartfelt gratitude to Judy Rose, music teacher; Natalia McKay, learning center teacher; Hannah Abusneineh, community agent, and David Gardner, head custodian for their service to our community. I wish them well as they move on to new chapters in their careers. Welcome to Jason McLeod, our new head custodian, and Chelsea Ashcraft, part time ESL teacher. We are working to finalize new hires for the remaining positions and will introduce our new team members when they are onboard.

I am excited to announce the hiring of Dr. Sherree Coleman as the second Assistant Principal of Lane Middle School. Dr. Coleman comes to us with a wealth of experience, most recently as administrator of Benson High School's Summer Scholars program and counselor at Benson High. She will make a strong contribution to our administrative team and to our community. Welcome!
