Student Conduct & Discipline Policy Survey

Portland Public Schools wants to hear from you to inform the Board of Education’s continuing work to revise the district’s Student Conduct and Discipline Policy. The revision is intended to create a more restorative, equity-focused policy.

Please take our survey, which is available in English and our five supported languages: Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian and Somali.

The Board of Education is reviewing the policy (4.30.010-P), which was last revised in 2009. A revision was introduced at the July 16 Board meeting and remains open for public comment, with the Board’s Policy Committee continuing to work on it. Key planned changes and updates include:

    • Adding a trauma informed lens to discipline practices
    • Focusing on restorative practices within a Multi-Tiered System of Support framework
    • Adding clear definitions
    • Aligning the policy to the district’s Racial Equity and Social Justice lens

One change that was made because of a suggestion made in a public comment: adding specific language about the needs of students in Special Education programs.

After the survey results are compiled, recommendations for changes will be submitted to the Policy Committee for further review. The committee will send a final version to the full Board for a second reading and vote at a future meeting.
