Founded in 1990, De Paul Alternative High School received full accreditation from the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools in 2010. It was re-accredited in 2015. Each year, nearly 200 students attend classes while in they are in residential treatment for substance abuse and addiction. At De Paul we are committed to providing a supportive learning environment for all students, regardless of their educational histories. We believe firmly that young people are natural learners and want to be successful in school—and we treat them that way. Intellectual growth and critical thinking skills are crucial to sobriety and provide young people in treatment with a foundation for life-long learning. We help them to recover high school credits and build a path toward finishing school. The school balances academic work and life-skills. Our staff design individualized academic learning opportunities to build learner confidence and support psychological wellbeing

De Paul is the only residential drug and alcohol treatment facility in northwest Oregon that accepts adolescents regardless of ability to pay. The De Paul Youth Treatment Center is located next to St. Charles Church near NE 42nd and Killingsworth. The De Paul Alternative School is also located on the same site.

Treatment at De Paul is strengths-based. It includes, but is not limited to, individual counseling, group and family counseling, drug and alcohol education, and anger and stress management. De Paul also provides services to students with co-occurring mental health issues. This is called having a dual diagnosis, when someone experiences mental illness and substance use disorders simultaneously. The staff include a dietitian, a registered nurse and a psychiatric nurse practitioner. The program expands students’ horizons through exposure to arts and cultural activities, career options, recreation, physical fitness and volunteerism. Students can earn school credit at the De Paul Alternative School while in treatment.
