At Glencoe, we are concerned about the amount of energy our school uses. During the months of January, February and March of 2007, we participated in an Energy Conservation Program sponsored by PGE. Our goal was to reduce our energy consumption by 5% over the previous year for the same time period. In 2006 we got a late start in early February and reduced our energy by 3%, the most of anyone in the Portland Public School District. In 2007 we were ready with our Power Pal team who went from classroom to classroom to let all our students know about the program and what we could do to meet our goal. They gave tips on ways to reduce electrical use in the building, as well as brainstorming with students for additional ideas and ways for us to meet our goal. Power Pals created energy conservation posters and posted them throughout the school. "Don't forget to turn off the lights when you leave" reminders were posted on all light switches throughout the school. Our monthly results were posted on a chart in the cafeteria so everyone would know how we were doing.
At the end of the three month period, we were amazed at our results! We said we would be happy if we reduced our usage by 5%, but when the final results came in, we were astonished. Our energy conservation was 10.8%, the highest of any of the schools that participated in the program! By reducing our energy usage by this much, we saved the district $800 in energy costs. Think what could be done if everyone in the district did their part!! It just goes to show that when everyone works together towards a common goal, great things can be achieved.
Glencoe continues to be energy wise by replacing old high wattage bulbs with more energy efficient bulbs and being cognizant of turning off lights when not in use.
