The First Day of School is Just Around the Corner8/11/2023
The start of a new school year is almost upon us. This is always an exciting time at Portland Public Schools. As the summer is winding down, we are gearing up for a productive and fun year of learning and growing together.
The first day of school for most PPS students is Tuesday, August 29. There are some notable exceptions. See below for a detailed breakdown.
K-5 schools: All students in grades 1-5 start on August 29.
K-8 schools: All students in grades 1-8 start on August 29. Exceptions include Sunnyside K-8 and Metropolitan Learning Center (MLC).
At Sunnyside K-8, grades 1-6 and students new to 7th-8th start on August 29. Students returning to 7th-8th grades start on August 30
At MLC, students in grades 1-8 start on Aug 31. The first two days of the year, August 29-30, are for family conferences.
Kindergarten begins Tuesday, September 5. All kindergarteners and their families will participate in Kindergarten Ramp Up between August 29 and September 1. The Ramp Up includes a one-day orientation for kindergarten students and a one-on-one conversation between each kindergarten family and their teacher. Kindergarten school teams will contact families to schedule these events.
Middle schools: Students in grade 6 will start on August 29. Students in grades 7-8 will begin on August 30.
High schools: Students in grades 9 and 12 will begin on August 29. Students in grades 10 and 11 start on August 30.
At Alliance High School, all students start on August 29.
At MLC, students in grades 9-12 start on Aug 31. The first two days of the year, August 29-30, are for family conferences.
Pre-kindergarten begins Monday, September 11. Prior to that date, PreK school teams will contact families to schedule a home visit with their child’s teacher.
