Director Wang came to Portland in 2001, where he attended Lewis and Clark College for his Masters in Education. He taught in North Clackamas School District for 6 years and Portland Public for 10 years, most recently at Benson Polytechnic High School where he taught biology and physics. Somewhere in those years, Director Wang has also coached high school ultimate frisbee and JV baseball. He left classroom teaching in 2019, and worked for 3 years as a University Supervisor at Portland State University’s College of Education, coaching new teachers and masters degree candidates. Also in 2019, Director Wang started a business making musical instruments. 

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Director Wang grew up seeing first hand the effects of racism and de facto segregation in schools. To him, being an educator meant being able to tackle these issues on the ground. Since he started teaching in 2001, Director Wang has consistently been vocal about the disparities in discipline among black and brown students when compared to their peers. While in North Clackamas, Director Wang was appointed and involved in developing new science curriculum for the district that both addresses diversity as well as increases accessibility through an inquiry approach. Prior to beginning board service,  Director Wang was involved in the Southeast Guiding Coalition (SEGC) as a parent representative. Most importantly to Director Wang, he is a parent to a PPS student.
