The Wilson College and Career Center occupies room 220 and is run by staff and volunteers to help students fulfill career related learning graduation requirements, research careers and colleges, and apply to college and for financial aid. The services offered in the CCC complement the work of the Counseling Department in preparing Wilson students to achieve their post-high school goals.

Pathways and Personalized Learning

Portland Public Schools is committed to preparing its students for successful futures. One way is through PPS Pathways, a grade 7-12 initiative that offers students the academic foundation and career-related skills to prepare them for study at four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, technical institutions or other post-secondary training. Kelly Milford was a counselor at Wilson from 2007 until the spring of 2016. A California native, she got into school counseling after seven years of working on grant-funded programs in community health education, leading wilderness education courses, supporting science in the United States Antarctic Program, and doing a lot of traveling in between. She enjoys living and working in the Wilson community with her husband and two children and looks forward to spending time outside whenever possible.

OSAC Scholarships: The Oregon Student Access Commission is a clearinghouse for over 300 scholarships for Oregon students. By completing their application, you can apply for the Oregon Opportunity Grant and up to 20 scholarships including two for Portland Public School students and three specifically for Wilson seniors. The OSAC application will be available in early November; stay tuned for more information.

Editing Service: There are four Personal Statements required on the OSAC application. They can be only 250 words each, a real challenge. Our editing service is available to help you. Be smart and take advantage of help from the editors or one of the College Center Volunteers. Editing service hours will be announced after the application becomes available.

Scholarship Searches: There are a number of free scholarship search services available to you. You complete a profile, the search engine runs it against a huge body of scholarships, you receive notification of scholarships that match your profile. This can be very helpful, it allows you to sort through a huge database and focus on the scholarships that match your interests and background. The sites we recommend for your search are: Naviance, Fastweb, or Scholarshipexperts.com. Again be sure to take advantage of our volunteers and editors to help. Get started and good luck!

Ms. Morgan earned her bachelor’s degree from Trinity College in Washington DC with a major in Political Science. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Marylhurst University in West Linn, Oregon.  "I am passionate about helping students explore their career interest," says Kate. A native Oregonian, she graduated from Marshall High School in Portland, Oregon. For fun, she enjoys reading books, outdoor activities, and watching movies.

Ms. Morgan is on maternity leave for the rest of the 2015-16 school year.

Providence Medical Career Highlight Program

Providence has a variety of Career Highlight events that will take place throughout the year. The upcoming career days are rehabilitation services, surgical technologist, and emergency services. Portland Police Cadet Program  Now Accepting Applications

Students in grades 10-12 who are interested in a career with the Portland Police  can apply. This is a competitive program, so please apply as soon as possible.

The Police Cadet Program is designed to provide an introduction to law enforcement to young men and women who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. To apply and for more information see Ms. Morgan in room 221 or visit the Police Bureau Cadet Page.

Info Session: Officer Shadron from the Portland Police Bureau will be at Wilson in room 221 during tutor time on Thursday, October 8th.  He will offer more details and answer any questions you might have.


Portland Fire & Rescue Explorer Program Now Accepting Applications

Portland Fire and Rescue is now accepting applications for the Fire and Rescue Program. The Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) Explorer Program provides the opportunity for young men and women, ages 16 to 20, to become familiar with career opportunities available in the fire service. Summer Opportunities 2016

Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs (OAME) 2016 Summer Youth Entrepreneurs Conference one-day summer conference, Thursday, August 11, 7:30-4:00pm
The conference will be held at the OAME offices in Delta Park Business Park (they do work out rides from the Delta Park Max Station for any attendees who need a ride from there). The conference is open to students ages 14-21 who are interested in how a business is run and business planning while having fun in teams, hearing from some local speakers, earning and competing for cash prizes, and other rewards. Multnomah County Animal Shelter Kitten Trailer/Foster Internship
This is a good opportunity for someone wanting to get a job as a veterinary assistant or get a job in a shelter, etc. The internship is geared towards a high school or college student or recent graduate, looking to gain job experience. Must be 16 and a high school graduate. Click here for the application.

Volunteer Opportunity at Legacy Good Sam
Requirements are completion of 8th-grade (14 years of age), a recommendation from a school counselor or teacher and the ability to commit to a schedule and volunteer for a minimum of 50 hours. Food Works Summer Program Now Accepting Applications
Food Works Summer Program hires 20 youth aged 14-18 each summer. This is a volunteer leadership program that runs for 8 weeks during the summer. This year the Summer Program will run from June 28-August 26. Youth work out on the Food Works organic farm on Suavie Island, volunteer at hunger-relief organizations, participate in leadership and job-training workshops, and cook healthy and nutritious meals for themselves and their team-mates. They get a stipend of $150 every 2 weeks (a total of $600) and a bus pass for July and August. The program is based in North Portland, but any youth from Portland may apply. Every youth who applies will be given an interview. Applications are due June 21st, but interviews will start interviews sooner than that. Applications should be turned in to the Food Works office at 4610 N Trenton St.

Volunteer at Tryon Creek, Earn Community Service Hours
Are you a High School teen interested in science and nature? Are you looking for a fun way to volunteer with flexibility? Tryon Creek’s “Discover the Park Through Science” program is a great way to get started. Teen volunteers are needed to help run science-based stations to help kids and their families learn about the park from an earth science point of view. Teens can sign up for shifts on Saturday and Sunday from 1-3:00pm throughout the fall. Contact Volunteer Coordinator Lizzy Miskell (lizzy@tryonfriends.org) for more information and to sign up.

Multnomah County Library Summer Reading Volunteer Recruitment
Are you looking for something to do this summer? Volunteer in your local library! Multnomah County Library is looking for volunteers for the Summer Reading program. Every summer the program encourage kids and teens to read for fun and become lifelong library users. Volunteers get people signed up, award prizes, talk with people about books, help with events, and more! Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills and get service hours for school. University of Oregon Center for Youth Enrichment/Talented and Gifted Education
Looking for an academic challenge this summer? The University of Oregon's 2015 Summer Enrichment Program is accepting applications. Students live on campus for this two-week college immersive program. For more information on the requirements and application process go to http://uoyetag.uoregon.edu

FBI Youth Leadership Academy
The Portland Division will hold its seventh annual FBI Youth Leadership Academy July 12-215, 2016. The academy gives motivated high school students the chance to develop leadership skills by engaging them in team-building experiences, exposing them to careers in law enforcement, and encouraging them to communicate and collaborate across cultures. Participants have direct interaction with FBI special agents and community leaders throughout the program. Activities will include interview/resume skills, physical fitness, hands-on forensics work, and participation in a mock crime scene investigation. Students must attend all days of the academy, and we anticipate offering more opportunities for graduates of the program throughout the upcoming school year. Application available here.
