The Office of Technology, Information Services (OTIS) is implementing the work. The process started with the District's 2021-2025 strategic plan, Forward Together which mentioned the goal is to “disrupt racial inequities by applying the PPS RESJ Lens to analyze and interrogate high-leverage system change opportunities, including policies, processes, and resource allocation.”

Spring 2025 Bond 2020 Tech Update

Completed Work

The classroom teaching station computer installation in Phase 1 of the Bond 2020 Tech Classroom modernization project was completed in October 2024 for Bond 2020 Schools. It included a new Chrome desktop computer and monitor for over 2,000 classrooms!

All Gyms in Bond 2020 Tech schools have received a table-top style laser projector on a tech cart to replace the existing projectors and provided a computer and monitor that rolled into the gym and are used for daily health and gym classes.

Jefferson, Wells and Cleveland Bond 2020 Tech installation work has been completed and included new desktop computers and monitors, wall mounted phones and more stable Wi-Fi school wide. Since these buildings are earmarked for new buildings, in the future these sites will receive the new classroom tech improvements as part of those future new building projects and are not included in scope for Bond 2020 Tech.

Device refresh was completed for all School Administrators, Support Staff, Students and Teacher mobile computers in 2021.

Work In Progress

The Bond 2020 Tech Phase 2 patch and paint will be completed at night this spring and summer for the Bond 2020 Educational Technology Improvement Project’s School Group 1-4.5 schools. Work at Jackson and Chapman has had cabling completed and the classroom tech installations will continue once a new contracting company has been selected in the procurement process. School Group 5 is in the design phase and implementation will begin in the fall 2025.

Bond 2020 Tech School Phase 2 scope of the Classroom Technology Improvements projects will include in each classroom the following items: a wall mounted phone for the teachers in the standardized location by the classroom door, an Airtame unit so anyone, with approval from the teacher, within the classroom can stream to the projector, a new Lightspeed audio amplification system with a microphone for the classroom teacher and student engagement mic, and a new laser projector.

The new Artome AV Cart has been approved for Elementary Schools and Middle Schools moving forward as the new standard for School Group 5-17. The new Artome AV Cart will house the laser projectors, Lightspeed audio amplification system, the Airtame unit, will have a built in robust speaker, and will be able to be plugged into the teaching wall power outlet and will project onto the teaching wall whiteboard. This will allow the project schedule to move faster for each school since the teaching wall won’t need the additional cabling.

Each school will have available at the Front Office an Assistive Listening System (ALS) bundle that can be available upon request for guests or volunteers. These new ALS bundles can be able to be used throughout the school and will be checked back in at the Front Office once the guests are exiting the school building.

Fall 2021 Update

November 2021 Pilot Phase
Design work is underway for the Pilot Phase using group one schools Cesar Chavez, George, Lane and Boise-Eliot. These four schools were selected because of their challenging facility construction makeup due to the age of their buildings. These four schools need the same tech modernizations and are all Title 1A, CSI or TSI ranked schools with 83% of students coming from historically underserved communities. Collectively all four schools have a total of 1,744 students.

Cesar Chavez, Lane Middle School and George Middle School are also Verizon’s Digital Promise Innovative Learning School Program Grant winners.

Details of the work

  • A new fiber-optic backbone will be added to each school that will increase connectivity, speed and durability.
  • Wi-Fi networks will be placed in each classroom so teachers and students will no longer feel the effects of slow internet speeds. Currently, Wi-Fi is shared between classrooms and speeds can slow when more devices are added.
  • Wi-Fi networks will also be added to non-classroom spaces. This will allow teachers to be more mobile and creative in choosing their class spaces allowing for more optimized school space utilization.
  • Each classroom will be upgraded to include a wall phone, a computer and monitor station, a wall-mounted laser projector and a drop-down projector screen for improved visibility.
  • An audio amplification and enhancement system will be added to classrooms so that a teacher’s voice can be heard at an equal level at any place in the room. This technology has been demonstrated to improve academic achievement and speech perception and increased on-task behavior.

Schedule for the work

Pilot Program Begins in Winter 2021

In order to effectively administer the work across the entire district, the Classroom Technology Improvement Project is starting the work through a pilot program at four schools. Boise-Eliot/Humboldt E.S., César Chávez K-8, George MS, and Lane MS. The pilot program work is set to begin in November 2021. The pilot program allows the project teams to apply lessons learned in those schools when the program is rolled out across the entire District. This will help ensure that future work will be accomplished in the most effective and efficient manner.

The subsequent roll out schedule criteria will center around diversity, equity and inclusion.  More details will be made available as the pilot program develops  To track the progress of the pilot program please consult the project timeline.

How long will the Educational Technology Improvement Projects take for each school?

Each school will have different levels of work that will need to be done based on the size of the school, age of the building, and other factors. It is estimated that on average the work at each individual school will take from one to four months to complete. Find the progress of your school in the 2020 Bond Educational Technology Project Timeline document.

Impact of the work on schools

The construction work will be conducted outside of regular school hours so that it will have a minimum impact on student and teacher’s classroom experience.
