The purpose of this website is to provide information that will support and assist Substitute Educators in PPS. The main resources provide information for day-to-day substituting with PPS as well as provide information on Frequently Asked Questions, Substitute Educator Resources, Site Report, Substitute Labor Agreement, and License Renewal.

Employment Opportunities

Substitute Educators are valued members of the Portland Public Schools community who play an integral role in supporting the students and school communities of Portland Public Schools every day. Working as a Substitute Educator with Portland Public Schools requires a high level of flexibility and adaptability, as Substitute Educators are eligible to work throughout the district in any school, any subject, and any grade level. Substitute educators work a flexible schedule on an as-needed basis, and have the ability to assign themselves to jobs via the Absence Management system.

Due to current budget constraints, we are closing our Substitute hiring pools for the remainder of the 2025/2026 school year.

If you are interested in substituting during the 2026/2027 school year, we encourage you to check our careers website in the coming months for updates and future opportunities. We are not able to offer a timeline on when the Substitute pools for next year may open at this time.
