Illness and Communicable Disease Response

Everyday Prevention Matters
Families can help prevent the spread of illness by encouraging regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, keeping masks available if needed, and staying home when sick.

PPS works closely with the Multnomah County Health Department (MCHD) and the Multnomah Education Service District (MESD) to monitor illness trends and notify families if additional steps are needed due to a contagious disease.

Consistent attendance is key to student success. By keeping children home when sick and staying up to date on vaccinations, families help protect their child and our entire school community.
Together, we can keep PPS schools healthy, safe, and focused on learning.

Measles Outbreak in Oregon

As you may know, there is a measles outbreak in Oregon. Per the Oregon Health Authority, there are 14 reported cases as of April 11, 2026, throughout the state.

Measles is a highly contagious disease. Symptoms typically begin with fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and sore throat, followed by a spreading rash. Vaccination is the most effective protection, with two doses of the MMR vaccine providing about 97% lifetime immunity.

In partnership with public health agencies, the school will follow established protocols if a case is identified, including contact tracing and reviewing vaccination records while maintaining privacy. Individuals without proof of immunity may be excluded from school or work for at least 21 days to prevent further spread. Families and staff are encouraged to review vaccination records, stay up to date on immunizations, monitor for symptoms, and remain home if sick. Please also notify the school if you or your student is experiencing symptoms or believes you may have been exposed.
