Oregon Law requires all students who are age seven and younger and who are beginning an education program for the first time to submit a Student Vision and Dental Screening Certification (link below) within 120 days of enrollment in school stating that the student has received an eye examination or vision screening, including any treatment or assistance to correct vision.
At each elementary school, the Multnomah Education Services District (MESD) School Health Services program offers an annual vision screening for students in Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 3. A “vision screening” is an eye screening test to identify potential vision health concerns. Kindergartners and 1st grade students also receive a hearing screening on the same day. The School Nurse oversees these screenings. Screening results for vision are sent home to parents/guardians.
The School Nurse is able to screen any student if a teacher or parent has a concern. If the Nurse is unable to provide a vision screening, the student may schedule an appointment with a Multnomah County Student Health Center for that screening.
MESD School Health Services can refer families to community resources to help reduce costs for students needing an eye examination or prescription glasses.
If you do not want your child included in a vision screening, you must submit a written request to the school each school year.
More information about vision screening requirements is available on the ODE Vision Screening webpage.
