My name is Susanna Walker, and I am your child’s 4th grade teacher. I arrive at Buckman by way of Chief Joseph Elementary and CJOG. Both have strong communities, and I enjoy that aspect of Buckman's culture as well.
Teaching is my second career. I earned a bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in professional writing from the University of New Mexico, which brought me to the advertising industry. After moving to Portland, I attended Portland State University to complete my master’s degree in education. I also have an endorsement in special education and am skilled in meeting the complex needs of a heterogeneous classroom. My training includes:
- STEAM strategies
- Educational sustainability
- Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS)
- Equity and social justice
- Restorative justice
- Multiple intelligences and learning styles
My learning philosophy is that each child has a unique learning style. One of my jobs as a teacher is to help your child discover their individuality and work alongside with them to maximize it. I believe in hands-on experiences, learning creatively, and learning though play and group work. It is my goal to create a community of learners who are committed to working hard and having fun. I want students to leave my classroom feeling confident that they can apply what they’ve learned in school to real-life situations. I want students to feel challenged and to have an enhanced passion for learning. I want students to express their unique and authentic selves with confidence.
Collaboration, cooperation, and open communication between home and school are keys to building a strong foundation for a successful school year. Please feel free to contact me at any time. I can be reached through the main office (503-916-6230) or via e-mail (swalker@pps.net). If you would like to talk in person, I am always available to schedule appointments before and after school. Please allow 24 hours for me to reply to email or messages on school days.
