Dear PPS communities,

We are sharing an update regarding the incident that occurred today at Benson Polytechnic High School.

This morning, a chemical spill at Benson required the school to be evacuated. The spill occurred when a student consumed chemicals he had brought to school. The student received medical attention and has been hospitalized. Others who reported discomfort were evaluated by emergency personnel but did not require hospitalization. Emergency responders contained the spill.

This was a distressing, scary incident for all involved, and we are grateful to the Benson staff and emergency responders who acted quickly and cared for students during the evacuation and response. Classes at Benson are cancelled for today and Wednesday, and will resume as normal Thursday morning.

The incident remains under investigation by the Portland Police Bureau, Portland Fire Department and PPS. We are unable to share additional details at this time. We will provide additional information as facts are confirmed, while protecting the privacy of the students and families involved.

Anyone who was at Benson and is concerned about possible physical exposure or symptoms should follow the instructions of emergency personnel and seek medical guidance. For immediate emotional or behavioral health support, call or text 988. If there is an immediate danger, call 911.
