Principal's Message

  • Student belongings pickup week of June 2-4.

    May 27, 2020

    Dear Rieke Rocket community,

We hope everyone is healthy and enjoying this unbelievable weather! We are busy still as Team Rieke, teaching from a distance while making plans to close up the building and creating a transition plan for next year. I eagerly await news about next fall, as do all of you, but for now we wait.

Next week June 2-4 we will be distributing student belongings to families here at Rieke. Teachers have put student belongings from the classroom, best we could, in labeled bags. In addition, Ms. Mitchell has student art portfolios. We will have a small team of staff here to hand off items to families during their grade level time windows. If you drive, please park in Wilson lot near the paving construction fences. The entrance from Vermont is closed. Then walk down the paved path west of the gym to the covered area, where we will be handing you student bags. People can then exit via the main stair case. If you have library books we will have a drop off cart, and we will have the lost and found items out if you want to look through. Please follow current social distancing guidelines. We have to be done daily by 2:00, as that is when the building is locked up.

The schedule for student belonging pickups:

    Tuesday June 2

    9:00-11:00 Kindergarten

    11:45-1:45  Grade 1

    Wednesday June 3

    9:00-11:00 Grade 5

    11:45-1:45 Grade 2

    Thursday June 4

    9:00-11:00 Grade 3

    11:45-1:45  Grade 4

If you have kids in multiple grades we will do our best to accommodate to save you from multiple trips. Stuff not picked up will be stored in classrooms until next year.

Our newest video news show is still under construction. I will let you know when it is ready. In addition we are working on plans for the “new” last week of school, June 8-10. As those plans are ready to release, I will communicate those plans. Hang in there, be kind, care for each other with grace, and know we miss you all!

  • Welcome back to the new world 3/30

    Dear Rieke rocket community,

I miss you all! I hope everyone is healthy and somehow finding some silver linings daily during this crisis. I empathize with the challenges of parenting at this time! Children run through a wide array of emotions throughout each day and week, as do we. Luckily, I have found many magical moments with my children (grades 2 and 4) and family as we experience life daily. I hope you are as well!

The Rieke auction committee has decided to move our annual auction to an online auction. They will be sending out information at the end of this week. While we will miss the energy of the party we hope everyone can participate, have fun, and help Rieke continue to raise the money we need to hire support staff.

A PPS email was sent to you on Friday outlining the plan PPS has developed for home-based learning while our schools are closed in Oregon. The email had a lot of information in it, so I thought it might be helpful to highlight some key elements that will directly impact Rieke students and staff.

There is a district-wide plan for home-based learning. Over the last two weeks, paper copies of language arts and math materials have been provided to students who have gone to the schools providing breakfast and lunch. This continues, on the west side that site in Markham. In addition to these paper materials, our teachers will begin providing students and families with more clear online learning opportunities starting the week of 4/6. Some of the work students are given will be done independently and there will also be times when students can connect to their teachers and classmates virtually or by phone. While many of our students and teachers are already familiar with the online programs being used for this, some of the platforms are new to them. To give teachers time to learn how to best provide online learning opportunities and become familiar with these new resources, teachers and I will be engaged in professional development this week. Instructional curriculum, focused on reading, writing and math, then should begin next week. Thank you for continued patience!

We are all facing unprecedented challenges because of the devastating impact of COVID-19. While we recognize that these online learning opportunities will not replace being in a classroom each day with a caring, competent educator, we know that social isolation can have an array of effects such as depression, anxiety, and loneliness especially on young children. To combat these issues, we are working hard to keep our children connected to their teacher and classmates through these difficult times by using online programs. While we believe that keeping the valuable connections students and teachers have made will help provide some stability to our children’s worlds, we also recognize that school may not be your primary focus at this time, and that is okay! We hope that you will do what you can to encourage your child to participate in some of the opportunities being provided and understand if they cannot do it all.

If your child needs technology or Wi-Fi access to participate in online learning, please let me know as soon as possible, jjeans@pps.net. The district was overwhelmed by the response and is working hard to distribute requested devices this week to grade 4-12 students. They are working on the next stage of this technology roll out for younger students and those who requested but have been told they must submit again later.

For more information about the district’s response to the coronavirus, please visit pps.net/coronavirus.

Please check our website www.pps.rieke for video updates and information. Cheers?

  • Update

    Dear Rieke rocket community,

I hope everyone is healthy and at least finding some ways to enjoy the beautiful weather. As an educator in my 29th year I can honestly, and obviously, say I have never faced such a challenge. I continue to try and stay calm and adapt and I hope somehow you all can too. I want everyone to know that the entire staff, Team Rieke, misses your children and deeply cares for their well-being and success. I am planning to continue the video news soon with updates and some musical interludes at www.pps.net/rieke.

For the time being Rieke will be used for childcare for OHSU first responders and their family needs. The custodial staff is busy deep cleaning and the teachers have come and cleaned up their rooms. Thank you in advance for supporting this endeavor.

We are waiting for a district level plan regarding any plan for instruction and curriculum resources. As details emerge I expect PPS to notify families and then we will message how that plan may look like from Rieke. But at this point, we ask for your patience. There are curriculum materials available at the PPS meal sites. On the west side this is at Markham Elementary.

Please continue to follow PPS communications and stay safe. Please follow the Oregon governor’s guidelines around exposure and personal/community safety. We are all in this together even if we are doing it from a distance.

    Warmly,

    Jon Jeans-Principal

  • New Principal message 3/6/2020

    March 6, 2020

    Dear Rieke Rocket community,

Thank you very much to everyone for all the great donations last week! The staff now has a new working microwave, the prize box is restocked at no cost to the school, and we now have a changing pad and table in the bathroom in the café/gym. If you have such a need with very little ones visiting with you, we hope the new changing area will be helpful.

Please join us March 14th for the Rieke auction, The Rieke Galaxy Gala. The classroom art projects are being brought in and they look amazing! We hope to have some on display to preview in the main hallway soon. There are only a very limited number of tickets left for the event at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center from 6-10 PM. This is a wonderful event and time to connect with our friends and neighbors while supporting staffing efforts at Rieke. The money raised by Foundation allows us to fill in staffing holes and provide better student supports throughout their day. To buy tickets https://www.riekepta.org/news/2020/2/25/auction-update-feb-25

On March 11th we will have 2 assembly performances of our Peruvian dance artist in residence program. At 9:30 we will get to see the k-2 students perform, then at 10:30 grades 3 and 4 will perform. All families are welcome to watch in the gym/café.

Parents, our great volunteers are getting the yearbook together and they need your candid on campus or field trip pictures. If you have a great picture from Science Fair, OBOB, recess or anything school related please send to riekeyearbook@gmail.com. Thank Bobbi Jo Rust and Jordann Kearns for organizing the yearbook this year.

Watch the Rieke Way video news show on our website each week. Share the link on the front page at https://www.pps.net/rieke. with friends and family.

As the information regarding the PPS plan and response to concerns about the coronavirus continues to evolve daily, please follow the PPS website and email announcements as needed. Our staff is doing all we can to provide opportunities for kids and adults to wash hands with warm soapy water, use hand sanitizer, and keep surfaces as clean as possible. The latest district flyer is attached.

Thank you for the continued support and appreciation for the great work Team Rieke is doing. It is really a joy to be here every day, cheers!

  • News of the Rieke Way 1/17/20

    Dear Rieke Rocket Community,

I hope everyone can find time to rest and reflect this weekend and on Monday as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. May his message of hope and call for social justice inspire all of us to help make our world a better and more equitable place for all.

There is also no school Monday the 27th as teachers work on report cards and planning for the second half of the year. We will be sending home report cards at the beginning of the week of February 3rd.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm as we all work together to raise and educate these fine children. Our volunteer numbers continue to grow and we are grateful. December was our best month yet with 112 volunteers giving 394 hours of their time. That was about 25% higher than November. Can we again grow by at least 10%? What a fun challenge!

Here are some upcoming volunteer opportunities: The Science Fair will be held here on February 20th. We have Entry Forms in the office that help us know how many tables and volunteers we may need. The Oregon Battle of the Books is starting soon, the organizers are looking for volunteer moderators. We have four rooms of competition and need a moderator for each room. The first dates are Tuesday, February 4, and February 11, from 5-8pm.

Our web site continues to slowly grow as a resource and source of useful information. Please check out Site Council notes and equity resources we have shared. Did you know you can watch the Rieke Way video news show on our website each week? Check it out on the front page at https://www.pps.net/rieke. We are happy it includes our first segment of Kindergarten Corner! We are having fun with the show and welcome ideas and feedback!

On Friday January 24th at 9:00 we will host our next Rieke Way assembly to celebrate students demonstrating the trait of determination. We know school is great but it is also challenging and it is important to acknowledge how students rise above these challenges. Families of students being honored should get classroom invitations but all families are welcome to join us! Then stay to volunteer if you have time too!

In February we will be hosting a Peruvian dance artist in residence. She will work with each class for four sessions over the month and then all students will have a performance. More details will come soon!

With new state money entering PPS next year we are looking to best position ourselves to bring more families and students in so we can grow and lower class sizes next year. On this front there are some important events and dates upcoming. The PPS Enrollment and Transfer petition process opens February 5th and is open until March 6th. This is for families not living in our attendance area, those wanting to return to us as their neighborhood school, or to help with other hardships. If you know families looking to possibly transfer to Rieke we can certainly help with the process. On Wednesday, February 19th we are hosting a Connect to Kindergarten, the Rieke Way, an informational night here at the school. The event is intended for adults and runs from 6:30-7:30. We are asking for your help in getting the word out about this event (open to any possible incoming families) and the positive community spirit here at Rieke.

Information from the nurse about immunizations:

Exclusion day for state required vaccinations is Wednesday, February 19, 2020.  Letters will be mailed to parents whose children are not up to date or whose records are incomplete.  Should you receive a letter, please provide updated information to the school as soon as possible.  Children who are not current for vaccinations by February 19th will not be able to attend school until records are complete.  If you need assistance in locating a health care provider or clinic site, please contact your school nurse.

The following is a message from Filip Hristic, Principal of Wilson High School:

It is very important that Wilson High School is added to the November 2020 Bond. Please encourage your PTAs and parents to contact our school board with the following message: “The time has come to modernize Wilson, Jefferson, and Cleveland.” And of course you can add modernizing and improvements to the Rieke community. Cheers!

    Have a wonderful weekend,

    Jon Jeans-Principal

  • Happy New Year!

    Dear Rieke Rocket Community,

We hope everyone had a relaxing and fun filled break from school over the holidays. Can you believe it is really 2020? Here at Rieke we are very excited for 2020 as we believe it holds great promise for the fine young students in our community. We are continuing to grow in our integration of the new reading and writing curriculum, which gives us momentum in reaching our goal of Rieke being a model of instructional excellence. With new state money entering PPS next year we are looking to best position ourselves to bring more families and students in so we can grow, add teaching staff, and lower class sizes next year.

On this front there are some important events and dates upcoming. The PPS enrollment and transfer petition process opens February 5th and is open until March 6th. In case of extreme weather this is the link PPS has provided. https://www.pps.net/Page/124  We have also put informational links about this on our website, https://www.pps.net/rieke. Speaking of weather, we have an ever growing collection of fine clothing in our lost and found. Next week we will also have a new student video news episode up on our website. Check it out, new episodes featuring your kids every Tuesday!

On Wednesday the 15th the PTA and I are hosting a Rieke community equity meeting in our library. Our theme for this discussion will be inclusivity and welcoming of all of our community at Rieke. If you are able to join and share your perspective and ideas that would be excellent. Childcare will be provided across the hall by PTA. If you cannot attend but still want to add to the conversation, here is the link to the Rieke equity  survey.  At your convenience please fill out this google survey regarding our successes and needs, in order to help us address equity issues within the Rieke community.

Finally, there is no school Monday January 20th in honor of Marin Luther King Day. There is also no school for students on the 27th as teachers begin preparing student report cards. We will send them home with kids to all families the first week of February. In February we will be hosting a Peruvian dance artist in residence. She will work with each class for four sessions over the month and then all students will perform for the parents and students. More details will come soon!

Thank you all for helping make Rieke such a special school. Stay musical, creative and strive to be your best.  Cheers!

PS. This is from Wilson High School.

    Dear Wilson Community,

Earlier this week the PPS School Board decided to place a construction bond on the November Ballot.  The Board has not determined yet how big the bond should be or which schools should be included on the bond.  Wilson is one of three remaining PPS high schools that is not modernized or is not in the process of being modernized.  For those of you who have spent any time in our building you probably know our facilities have not changed much since 1957.  Please join me in encouraging district leaders and school board members to include Wilson on the 2020 Bond   We have done some preliminary work to determine what a modernized Wilson could look like.  We welcome your ideas and suggestions as well.  We also need your support.

    With Gratitude,

    Filip Hristić, Ed.D.

    Principal, Wilson High School

  • Happy holiday thank you

    Dear Rieke Rocket Community,

On behalf of the entire Rieke staff, affectionately called Team Rieke, I would like to thank you all for an amazing start to the 2019-20 school year. Your support, spirit of generosity, inclusivity, and ever increasing volunteer energy truly inspire us as we continue to strive to be a model of excellence in public education. 2020 holds so much promise and potential for your children. We hope you can help us spread the positive message of the Rieke Way as we aim to gather more families and students so that in 2020-21 we are not only an excellent school, but an excellent school with smaller class sizes. Together I believe we can do this.

We wish you a happy holiday and New Year. May you find time to spend with your families and be thankful for the gifts we all share. Cheers!

    Team Rieke

  • News of the Rieke Way 12/6/19

    December 6, 2019

    Dear Rieke Rocket community,

Can you believe we are only 2 weeks, 10 school days, away from winter break? Thank you for all you do to support us here at Rieke! As we look to grow our community and position ourselves to increase staffing next year at Rieke please keep spreading the word of the positive learning environment we are continuing to grow at Rieke. We truly appreciate all the volunteer energy and spirit the community (and the kids!) provide to make this work so rewarding.

Our Rieke Way theme for December is patience. This can be a challenging time of year for kids to be patient and wait to see the fruits of their hard work and kindness. But we all know they can be patient and learn its valuable lessons. We will have an all school assembly on 12/19 at 9:00 AM to celebrate some special patient students.

We continue to work to provide some supervision for students who arrive early before school or stay later after school on our playground. But we are understaffed. I have decided to allow more access to students on fitness devices (scooters, bikes, skateboards) given certain parameters. All students on wheeled vehicles need helmets and should only ride in the covered area. From 8:25-8:40 and 3:00 to 3:15 we have many younger siblings in these shared spaces who need a safe place to play and wait. We are asking students to not ride around on wheels between 8:25 and 3:15 in any area.

Are you interested in participating in the Rieke community equity committee? Here is the link to the Rieke equity  survey.  At your convenience please fill out this google survey regarding our successes and needs, in order to address equity issues within the Rieke community. We have scheduled our next community equity meeting for Wednesday 1/15 in the evening. Childcare will be provided.

Our PTA sponsored garden education program has begun! Denise Manzi, our lunch sustainability coordinator (and literacy EA) is helping teachers teach gardening and natural art work! If you would like to volunteer to help, please let Denise (demisajo@yahoo.com) or your child’s teacher know. If you would like to join our Green Team please email jjeans@pps.net. Our recycling efforts at lunch in the café and in the building continue to expand as we welcome new ideas.

We are supporting a group of Wilson HS students who are starting a tutoring/mentoring program here at Rieke. The group of 8-15 high school students will be here on Mondays in Room 21 from 3:00-400 to provide tutoring and cooperative game time. If you are interested in your child participating please email me jjeans@pps.net for more details.

As winter approaches please send students to school with enough warm layers to keep them toasty and dry. In general, unless rain is heavy, students will spend time outside during the day at 2 or 3 recess times including lunch. Keeping an extra sweatshirt and/or hat in a backpack is a great strategy. If you write your student’s name on the item it is easy for us to return to them rather than place lost items in lost and found.

This is an update from our school nurse regarding Immunizations for December. If your child is still incomplete in their immunizations, please make arrangements to obtain vaccinations and to provide this information to the school.  Exclusion day for state required vaccinations is Wednesday, February 19, 2020.  Students who are not current will not be able to attend school until current immunization records are provided to school staff. Please contact the office with any questions.

    Cheers!

  • News week of 11/25

    Nov 22

    Dear Rieke Rocket community,

Parent teacher conferences are next week. There are no fall report cards, rather progress sharing at PTC’s. Please note that there is no school the week of November 25th. Instead we host all day PTC’s on the 25th and 26th. Please make an appointment if you have not. These are our 2 days in the year dedicated to parents and staff discussing their children. Lost and Found items will be displayed in the hallway by the office from Monday morning until Tuesday at 6:00. Then all unclaimed items will be donated.

We are looking to grow our small team of volunteers to help during conferences. Our storage room is overloaded and needs some purging and thoughtful reorganization. The plan is that Monday the 25th we could take most of the items out into the hallway, purge and organize. Then on Tuesday the 26th we would put items back into the storage room on the shelves with more purpose. This would really help the staff. You can sign up to volunteer through the PTA or just show up.

Thank you to everyone for such a successful Rieke Way Spirit Week. It was wonderful to see such positive energy. I feel ever grateful to be the Principal here at Rieke! As we near the end of 2019 it is important for us to share the positive happenings and community at Rieke in order to gather future students and families. With more students I believe we will increase our staffing from PPS and thus reduce class sizes next year. The PTA was able to have a strong fund raising effort selling spirit gear. When our kids wear these out in the community it helps spread enthusiasm for our school. Thank you!

Are you interested in being part of the Rieke equity committee? Here is the link to the Rieke equity  survey.  At your convenience please fill out this google survey regarding our successes and needs, in order to address equity issues within the Rieke community. Our first equity team meeting will be held in the library from 10:30-11:30 during Monday the 25th conferences. I will facilitate as we hopefully can analyze the data from the survey to create an agenda for the committee for this school year. Email jjeans@pps.net if interested or just show up on the 25th and participate.

Our PTA sponsored garden education program is beginning! Denise Manzi, our lunch sustainability coordinator (and literacy EA) will help teachers teach gardening and natural art work starting soon! If you would like to volunteer to help please let Denise (demisajo@yahoo.com) or your child’s teacher know. If you would like to join our Green Team please email jjeans@pps.net. Our first meeting is this Monday the 25th at 5:00 in the office. Our plan is to have this team meet every 4-6 weeks to discuss and plan our sustainability efforts at Rieke.

The PTA is still looking for volunteers for December 3rd with the wreaths. The link is below.

  • October 10th announcements

Enjoy the long weekend of hopefully beautiful weather! After such a strong start I believe our students (and their parents!) need a little extra rest to restore health and strength.

Our newly created student video news is on our web site. Please check out episode 1 at https://pps.net/rieke. We are filming on Monday mornings if you would like to volunteer any technical skills. Our editor, Ian, is an 8th grader at Gray Middle School who is involved in their media production. Thank you Ian!

Here are some quick reminders. There is no school Friday, October 11th. It is a statewide inservice day. Champions is not open that day either. One activity available is Wilson Cheer camp at Wilson High School. The Lost and Found closet is overflowing. Please check out the Lost and Found and claim your child’s missing items. Our goal is to keep the items until Parent Teacher Conferences in November but we may need help in figuring out new ways to store these belongings. Picture retake day is coming soon, October 22nd. This is the day they will take class photos as well.

The second Rieke Service Club project of the year is coming up next week - the Annual Book Harvest. This project collects books to benefit the Children's Book Bank ( www.childrensbookbank.org ). Please look high and low on your bookshelves to help us collect gently used or new books appropriate for babies, toddlers, early elementary students through grade 3 and bring them to Rieke starting Monday, October 14th through October 25th.  There will be boxes for collection at the school entrance and in each teacher's classroom.  Please contact Jeni Meurer at jenimeurer@gmail.com for questions or more information.

The next general PTA meeting is Tuesday October 15th from 6:00-8:00 at Casa Colima. Childcare will be provided at Rieke in the gym during that time. Come have fun with your fellow parents and let your voice and perspective be part of the PTA.

On October 21st in the morning, all second grade students will take the TAG screening test. These tests should only take 30 minutes for students to complete. Attendance that day is important to give each student the opportunity.

Our school Site Council will have its first meeting Tuesday October 29th from 3:15-4:30. The purpose of this leadership group is to gather ideas from our parents, share the instructional work at Rieke, and work together to create a targeted school improvement plan that we can act upon. If you are interested please let me know via email, jjeans@pps.net. It requires some commitment to meetings at least quarterly. Thank you for the handful parents who have already expressed their interest!

Our new PPS security system Raptor has been installed and is active. This system requires all volunteers to show a valid ID the first time you volunteer. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we add this important security feature to PPS campuses.

    Cheers!
