  • Wednesday, January 18: Late start canceled, weather permitting school starts at regular time

    We continue to prepare for schools to reopen tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18, 2017.

    Please note that our plan is for schools to start at regular times tomorrow making this the first day of eliminating late starts for professional development as part of our plan to restore lost instructional hours due to weather-related closures this winter.

  • School conditions update for Tuesday, January 17

      Facilities staff have been clearing parking lots and pathways, like here at West Sylvan.

    We continue to work to get schools ready to open tomorrow. Ice is our biggest barrier and concern, and the safety of students and staff is our priority.

    The vast majority of our schools have been cleared of snow yet, there are still a significant number that have walkways and other paths covered in ice, which we are working to clear today.

    We want to update you on the status of our work to prepare our schools for the safe return of staff and students. Since Wednesday, our dedicated custodians and maintenance staff have been working very long hours to clear pathways, manage building power, plumbing and heat to ensure all of our utilities are operational given the freezing conditions that can impact pipes and electricity.

  • Friday, January 13: All schools and offices closed

    Schools will be closed tomorrow Friday, January 13.  Our teams have been out today clearing school sidewalks and parking lots and putting the chains on buses, however it is still unsafe on the streets and sidewalks for all of our students and staff to get to school.   All weekend activities including athletics are also canceled.

  • Thursday, January 12: All schools and offices closed

    Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler declared a local emergency as a result of the near-record snowfall last night and through today. Temperatures are expected to remain low overnight leaving significant amounts of snow on city roads and sidewalks. Power is also a concern in certain parts of the city and some of our schools. Because of the continued weather impacts, all PPS schools and district offices will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, January 12.

    Due to heavy snow expected until tomorrow afternoon, PPS is closing all schools and district offices tomorrow, Wednesday, January 11. All after-school activities, including athletics, Civic Use of Buildings permits and Portland Evening Scholars, are canceled.

    Due to tonight’s weather forecast, PPS is canceling all activities for tonight after 6pm, including all athletics, Civic Use of Buildings permits, and Evening Scholars. We will continue monitoring the weather forecast and will keep you updated if there are any changes for school tomorrow.  There will be an abbreviated meeting of the Board of Education at 6pm tonight.  Read the revised agenda here.
  • Monday, January 9: All schools and offices closed

    Conditions are still treacherous this morning and at this point it does not look like roads and sidewalks will be clear enough for students to get to school safely, so all schools and district offices will be closed today, Monday, January 9. All after-school and evening activities, including child care, athletics, and Portland Evening Scholars, will also be cancelled.
  • Jan. 7-Jan. 8: All activities, including athletics are cancelled due to forecasted bad weather

    Given the weekend forecast, PPS is canceling all activities, including athletics and Civic Use of Buildings permits, for Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8. We will continue monitoring the forecast going into next week.
