    Hello Buckman Families,

This is the last day of Quarter 2, and I hope it finds you well. Tomorrow is a Teacher Grading day, so a gentle reminder that we have no school for students. The progress your students have made this year is notable, and I am excited to see the learning continue through the middle of June and beyond.

At Tuesday’s staff meeting, we reviewed different resources for honoring Black Excellence during Black History Month. Each grade level has made plans to honor outstanding Black individuals throughout the month and are looking forward to sharing. I am grateful for Black History Month, and honoring Black Excellence all year makes more sense.

As we reach the halfway point, I am grateful for our Buckman school community. We love your children as they challenge and inspire us. Their growth, physically and social-emotionally , is considerable and impressive. At all levels they are maturing, asking great questions, learning letter formation, writing paragraphs, and improving their mathematical computation, and research skills. Thank you parents for the opportunity to work with your children each day. I so appreciate you, and am also very grateful for our dedicated and tireless staff. We at Buckman are the best!

Have a restful and fun weekend!

    Best regards,

We will need helping hands to make this show a success! Look out for the volunteer sign up for the weekend of the show.

We are also still in search of a House Manager - this person helps to organize set up and take down of the show as well as troubleshoot the day of the event.      Panorama Successful Schools Survey

Starting next week, we are completing the Panorama Successful Schools Survey. This student survey is designed to gather student perception data about teaching, learning, and school climate. The survey is expected to take about 15 minutes. This information helps Buckman best support our students school-wide. All entries are anonymous. There are two developmentally appropriate versions of the survey for students in grades 3-5 and students in grades 6-12. Grades K-2 are not included in the survey.

Students will be asked questions in these main categories:

    • Skills and Competencies: The social, emotional, and motivational skills that help students excel in school, career, and life.
Example topics: Growth Mindset, Self-Efficacy, Social Awareness
    • Support and Environment: The environment in which students learn, which influences their academic success and social-emotional development.
Example topics: Sense of Belonging, School Safety
    • Well-Being: Students’ positive and challenging feelings, as well as how supported they feel through relationships with others.
Example topics: Positive Feelings, Challenging Feelings
If you have any questions, please contact our Successful Schools Survey Coordinator, Jess Firestone jfirest1@pps.net

Thank you for supporting Oma’s Hideaway and Buckman, we made $578 on Tuesday night!

Save the Date for our next Dines Out at XICO on Feb. 23rd, also Buckman parent owned.

The Buckman Foundation is already hard at work on the 2023 Buckman Auction, and we need your help! This is our school’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and it wouldn’t be possible with Buckman families stepping up to lend a hand.

    • Do you know a business that would be interested in sponsorship or donating to the annual auction?
    • Have amazing videography or video editing skills? Or know somebody who does? We’re looking for people who can help put together our special appeal video, featured at the live event.
    • Other great ideas?

Reach out by sending us an email at auction@buckmanelementary.org to let us know how you can play your part in making this year’s auction the best one yet!

    Save the date, May 13th!

Buckman Library Catalog - K-5 Monthly Reading Challenge

    • The library is still under construction addressing a mold situation. Library class has been pushing into students’ homeroom classrooms with engaging lessons and accessing digital books in the meantime. Students may return their Buckman library books at any time. Check-out and library classes will resume when the space is done.

    • For full access to many books and resources use the “Learning Resources” on the Buckman Library Catalog - link above.

    • Join us at our next general membership PTA meeting on Tuesday, February 7th. Hear about all the wonderful ways PTA supports Buckman, and how to get involved. This meeting will be virtual (link coming soon).

    • Come to our PTA Mixer! Join us on Thursday, February 9th from 5:30 - 7:00 at Enso Winery just a few blocks from Buckman (minors welcome until 6pm). This will be an informal and fun way to connect with PTA leaders and learn about open positions and other ways you can support all the great work we do. As we head into next year, it will be critical to find 2-3 additional people to step into these roles, so we don't lose our standing as an organization. Without board members, we are at risk of losing $30,000, which funds many things including but not limited to: classroom supplies and grants, events, teacher appreciation, equity efforts, drama teacher, SUN programming, crossing guard incentives.

    • Our next Community Coffee Chat is Friday, February 10th from 8:45 - 9:30. Join us in person and enjoy Concourse Coffee or virtually

    • Help us reach our goal of 75 PTA members! We are currently at 45. If you have not yet purchased one, head over to Oregon PTA - memberships are only $12.00 ($9.50+ $2.50 transaction fee). Being a member allows you to vote at PTA meetings, and assures we maintain our 501-c3 status-- allowing us to do all the things we do to support our school.
    • Support Buckman through community rewards programs! Choose Buckman PTA as your Fred Meyer Community Rewards designee, and raise money for Buckman just by grocery shopping. Pick up a blue bag for your empties (on the bulletin board across from the office), and redeem at any Bottle Drop location - all proceeds go to Buckman! Office Depot also offers rewards. All of this money adds up and is not insignificant in funding all that we do (see above).

Register your student for a SUN enrichment spring break camp March 27-31 at Buckman! The theme is Spring into Spring: An Exploration of Spring Through Art & Science. $220 for the week, 9am-4pm. Open to 1st-5th graders, registration link here.

    • Would you like to help coach a Girls on the Run team this spring? We are looking for assistance coaches on Mondays and Wednesdays 3-5:30pm for the season, which goes from March 6 - May 20, 2023. Contact Katie for more information.

Buckman Family Dance, FEBRUARY 10th, 5:30pm: This is a whole-family affair, kids will need to be with their grownups at all times! Pizza and snacks will be available by donation. If you'd like to volunteer to help set-up or run the event, sign up here.

How to talk about homelessness with your kids - MARCH 14th, 6pm: This is a panel Q&A event with experts from Catholic Charities, Impact NW, and HereTogether. Join us to learn what we can do to support our houseless neighbors and how to talk about it with our kiddos! Food and childcare provided.
