Sports update: Lincoln girls, Benson boys take PIL track titles
5/14/2018Lincoln ran away with the girls team title, and Benson used a strong performance in the sprints to win the boys championship in the Portland Interscholastic League track and field championships at Franklin High School on Friday.
In the girls meet, the Cardinals won seven individual events to earn a PIL-record 205 points and coast past runner-up Madison, which finished with 86 points. Junior Kyla Becker led the way with victories in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters, adding to the PIL cross country title she won in the fall.
Lincoln, which won its third consecutive PIL title, also got wins by junior Madison Fassiotto in the 400, junior Jane Anderson in the 800, senior Megan Richardson in the 100 hurdles, junior Charlotte Anderson in the javelin and senior Sadie Schreiter in the high jump.
Grant senior Judith Baxter Game put on another stellar performance in her final PIL meet as she won three events, the 200, long jump and triple jump. Roosevelt junior Ahliah Nordstrom won two events, the shot put and discus.
In the boys meet, Benson got wins in the 100 and 200 from sophomore Micah Williams and in the 110 and 300 hurdles from junior Jaylen Russell. The Techmen accumulated 128 points, 13 more than runner-up Lincoln and 15 ahead of third-place Wilson. Williams also ran a leg on Benson’s winning 4x100 relay team.
Senior Sawyer Christopher led Lincoln’s effort by winning three events -- the discus, javelin and high jump. Franklin senior Wil Eaton won two events, the 1,500 and 3,000.

The meets also served as qualifiers for the Class 6A state championships that start Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene. Two PIL athletes will try to repeat at state champions: Christopher in the boys javelin, and Baxter Game in the girls long jump.
Golf: The Wilson girls got over a big hurdle, winning the PIL title and advancing to the Class 6A state tournament that will conclude Tuesday at Trysting Tree in Corvallis. The title is the first since 1995 for the Trojans, whose roster includes junior Jessica Ewton, senior Mariquia Alferez, sophomore MacKenzie Titus, senior Talulah Beisel and sophomore Dakota Hedger.
Lincoln took the boys PIL title and is competing in the state tournament at Emerald Valley in Creswell.
Tennis: PIL competitors will take part in the Class 6A state tournaments that run Thursday through Friday at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton after competing in the league championships at the Portland Tennis Center earlier this month.
Lincoln junior Abraham Shugar won the boys singles title, defeating Wilson junior Caden Samkutty 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in the championship match. In the girls singles final, Madison senior Grace Lee defeated Roosevelt senior Rosaria Quim-Valdez 7-6, 6-0.
In doubles, Lincoln juniors James Chen and Danny Luo won the boys title, and Lincoln junior Maggie Satchwell and sophomore Julia Rees won the girls title.
Softball: After a tight regular season, Franklin won the PIL title for the third year in a row, finishing 17-1 in league play to stave off runner-up Roosevelt, which finished 16-2. After the teams split two games, Franklin won the rubber match 5-4 in 10 innings at Roosevelt. Senior Emma Foster went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs for the Quakers.
Franklin will be the lone PIL team to host a first-round game when the Class 6A state playoffs begin Monday. The Quakers will host McNary at a time to be determined.
Also from the PIL, Roosevelt will play at Roseburg, and Wilson will play at Glencoe. Lincoln also will play a road game, with the Cardinals’ opponent determined after play-in games are completed.
Baseball: Lincoln continued its run in the PIL, winning its fourth consecutive league title after it finished 12-2 in league, a game ahead of Grant.
Grant, however, finished higher at No. 14 in the OSAA ranking and will host South Eugene on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Walker Stadium to open the Class 6A playoffs. Lincoln, No. 16 in the ranking, also will have a home game, against Century at 4:30 p.m. at Gabriel Park.
Also in the playoffs from the PIL on Monday, Wilson will be at Central Catholic (time TBD) and Cleveland will be at South Salem at 5 p.m.
