Awards & Honors: PPS middle school students clean up on honors at science expo
4/22/2019Six projects by Portland Public Schools students were nominated for the Broadcom MASTERS, the nation's premier science and engineering competition for middle school students, as part of the recent Intel Northwest Science Expo Middle School Awards at Portland State University.
Two projects by Robert Gray students were nominated: Maia Schabel for a project titled “The Sky is a Rainbow,” and Ethan Kibbee for “Air Resistance Between Model Cars.” Also getting two projects nominated was ACCESS Academy at Lane: the team of Alexander Vassilev and Austin Yan for “Microwave Radiation and Plant Development,” and Gabriel Groom for “Static Friction of Bouldering Shoe Rubber.”
Also nominated were Winterhaven’s Stella Gibbons for “Will the Temperature Affect the Acidity of Water with a Dissolved Gas?” and Hosford’s Bronwyn Allabastro and Zoe Vanderwal for “Effects of Water Quality on the Biodiversity and Breeding Success of Aquatic Amphibians.”
The projects will be submitted for consideration, with nominees reduced to the top 300 on Sept. 4, finalists announced Sept. 18, and a finals competition held Oct. 25-26. The national competition includes a top prize of $25,000.
Several other projects from PPS students were given special awards at the NWSE event:
- From ACCESS, Naomi Fertig, who won in two categories - Outstanding Project in an Atmospheric Science Exhibit, and Outstanding Geoscience Project; Jake Yun and Ely Cunningham for Naval Excellence in Science and Engineering; Catcher Kemmerer for Outstanding Science or Engineering Project; and Malia Lee and Elizabeth Wickline for Water Prize Award for Excellence.
- From Winterhaven, Stella Gibbons won for Outstanding Geoscience Project; Grace Breger for Taking the Pulse of the Planet; and Esme Illing for Outstanding Project in Water Quality.
- Robert Gray’s Finn Suchara won in IEEE Special Awards.
- Bridlemile’s Francis Vowels and Joseph Moylan each won for Outstanding Project by a 5th Grade Student.

The event was held at the same site and time as the Intel NWSE Science Expo for high school students. The high school competition finalized the Oregon team that will represent the state at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Ariz., next month. Two PPS students earned spots: Tyler Mapes of Franklin with a project titled “Calculus of a Rocket Launch,” and Natalie Wang of Lincoln for “Characterization of the Role of Catalases in Hydroxyurea Toxicity.”
Wilson teacher honored: Wilson High School teacher Jamie Suehiro is one of four teachers who won a Celebrate Literacy Award, which honors Portland-area educators who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to literacy.
Suehiro teaches English, and is a department chair, instruction lead and AVID coordinator at Wilson. She will receive her award on May 8 at a ceremony at Parkrose Middle School. The award is for teachers in Multnomah and Clackamas counties, and the Beaverton, Sherwood and Tigard-Tualatin school districts.
Suehiro was nominated by her fellow Wilson English teacher, Jaydra Johnson, who in her nominating letter wrote about Suehiro’s leadership and professional generosity, ability to engage students in complex texts, and commitment to diversity.
“It is with a full heart and sure footing that I recommend her for this year’s award,” Johnson wrote. “She is undoubtedly a teacher who enhances and advocates for literacy at all levels of our school’s system.
West Sylvan wins state: The West Sylvan dance team won the state championship in the large middle school division at the recent junior competition at Woodburn High School.
The team, coached and choreographed by Jasmin Calvilllo-Ruelas, Keeley Driscoll, and Kerry Driscoll, won a state championship for the 11th time since 2004.
