The Portland Public School Board of Education will unveil a new format to take feedback and answer questions about district finances and processes as part of the process of vetting and approving the 2019-20 budget.
Martin Luther King Jr. students learn about color through unique art project Students at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary helped create a unique art project, “Shades of Beauty,” in which the skin tone of each student at the school was photographed. Students worked with New York-based artist Byron Kim to learn about and practice color mixing. Kim, whose work “Synecdoche” was the basis of the project, collaborated with students from the school and Portland State, teachers and community artists on the project, which is part the King School Museum of Contemporary Art and was generously supported by the school and its PTA.
Awards & Honors: PPS middle school students clean up on honors at science expo Six projects by Portland Public Schools students were nominated for the Broadcom MASTERS, the nation's premier science and engineering competition for middle school students, as part of the recent Intel Northwest Science Expo Middle School Awards at Portland State University.
Coming up: Visioning event set for OMSI; sales for used books and plants
Portland Public School’s Visioning process will hit the road for a guest spot at one of Portland’s iconic attractions, OMSI.
On Saturday, May 11, the Visioning core team will present an innovative, interactive exhibit of its work so far. PPS launched the Visioning initiative in 2018 as a way to identify and define what PPS can be, what it should be, and how students, staff, families and community can get to a defined and shared “North Star” for the district.
Astor students organize the school’s first Earth Day event Climate change was the theme when Astor students held a number of events to recognize Earth Day on Monday, April 22. Students who were not able to participate in the global student climate change event last month asked to do something for Earth Day and organized a variety of activities.
