Board approves school calendar for 2019-20
2/13/2019The 2019-20 school year in Portland Public Schools will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 28, and end (barring weather makeup days) on Friday, June 5.
That became official Tuesday night when the PPS Board of Education passed Resolution 5821, which approved Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero’s proposed 2019-20 school calendar. The calendar was presented to the Board at its Jan. 15 meeting, with public input invited in the period before Tuesday’s final Board vote.

The Superintendent’s goal with the calendar, informed by staff and community input, was to create a student-focused, family-friendly schedule.
“This calendar continues to eliminate late starts and early dismissals and better ensures five full instructional days in a typical week,” Guerrero said.
The calendar balances instructional days among semesters and quarters, with each of the four quarters having between 42 and 47 days. It also keeps teacher planning days mostly to Mondays and Fridays to avoid student breaks in the middle of the week.
The calendar retains several features of 2018-19, including a full week of no classes during the week of Thanksgiving, with parent-teacher conferences on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 25 and 26; schools closed on Wednesday, Nov. 27; and the traditional Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving.
The calendar also again keeps Presidents Day, on Monday, Feb. 17, as a possible snow makeup day, with a Jan. 18 deadline to designate it as such. The first three weekdays after the scheduled June 5 final day – Monday-Wednesday, June 8-10 – are reserved for snow makeup days, if necessary.
Spring break, March 23-27, will again be coordinated to align with the breaks of local universities so families with older siblings and university student interns who work in PPS buildings can have matched breaks.
