Awards & Honors: Lincoln senior named Oregon Student Journalist of the Year
3/19/2019Lincoln High School senior Sagarika Ramachandran has been selected as the winner of the Oregon Student Journalist of the Year Award. Sagarika, who serves as editor-in-chief of Lincoln's student newspaper, the Cardinal Times, became the first journalist from a PPS school to win the award, which started in 2005.
The award is co-sponsored by the Oregon Journalism Education Association and Northwest Scholastic Press Association. Candidates are judges in 11 categories. By winning, Sagarika becomes eligible for the National Journalist of the Year Award.
Spelling Bee champ: Agatha Chang, a seventh-grader at Winterhaven K-8, won the Pamplin Media Group Regional Spelling Bee at the Hollywood Theatre. Agatha correctly spelled “Persian” in the final round to beat 43 other students from the Portland area and earn a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee that will be held in May in Washington, D.C.
Three other PPS students competed in the event: ACCESS seventh-grader Jackson Morris, da Vinci seventh-grader Scarlet Hasseries and Jackson seventh-grader Abdullah Al-Jilani.
Battle of the Books: Four PPS elementary schools will send teams to the Oregon Battle of the Books statewide competition after they won regional competitions this month. Teams from James John, Rieke, Abernethy and Duniway will compete at the state event on Saturday, April 6 at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.
Those teams had to go through several steps to reach state, starting with winning their school competitions to qualify for regionals, which were held at four sites and involved 85 schools, including 49 from PPS. Teams had to read 16 selected books (see the list of titles) before each competition, then cooperatively answer questions.
Grant player wins state basketball award: Grant High School senior Aaron Deloney has been selected the Gatorade Oregon Player of the Year in boys basketball. Deloney, who was voted the Portland Interscholastic League Player of the Year, averaged 26 points this season in helping the Generals to a PIL co-championship and a fourth-place finish at the Class 6A state tournament.
The Gatorade award recognizes players for athletic excellence along with academic achievement and character.
PIL teams earn academic honors: Three PIL sports teams finished No. 1 in their classification in the OSAA OnPoint Community Credit UnionAcademic All-State teams for winter.
Teams were ranked in each classification by GPA. The Lincoln boys basketball team (3.77 GPA), Grant boys swimming team (3.88) and Cleveland wrestling team (3.58) all finished with the highest GPA in their sport among Class 6A schools. Also, Lincoln finished first among all teams in dance/drill, an OSAA-sponsored competitive activity.
Several other PIL teams finished in the top 10 in Class 6A in their sports. A full list is available at osaa.org/awards.
