School Board approves boundary changes for Peninsula and Chief Joseph2/14/2017
The Portland Public Schools Board of Directors voted unanimously last night to approve boundary changes to Peninsula and Chief Joseph schools, both feeder schools for Ockley Green Middle School. The 7-0 vote endorses one of two proposals from the District-wide Boundary Review Advisory Committee (DBRAC), which was formed in 2014 to help with enrollment balancing across Portland Public Schools.
These changes will help relieve crowding at Chief Joseph and create a more robust enrollment at Peninsula starting in the 2017-18 school year.
On February 6, 2017, Interim Superintendent Bob McKean presented this proposal to the School Board. It can be viewed at: www.pps.net/dbrac.
Details of this decision
The approved recommendation calls for a boundary change between Peninsula and Chief Joseph, converting Chief Joseph from a K-4 elementary school to a K-5 and removing 5th grade from Ockley Green, returning it to a 6-8thgrade middle school configuration.
The board’s decision completes the implementation of Ockley Green Middle School, which opened in August 2016. Beach, Peninsula and Woodlawn schools were also reconfigured from K-8 schools to K-5 elementary schools beginning this school year as part of the enrollment balancing process. No additional changes are proposed for Beach or Peninsula schools at this time.
What it means for students
Beginning in August 2017, Peninsula K-5 becomes the elementary school for new incoming kindergarten students living in addresses between I-5 and Brandon/Delaware Streets, north to the Columbia Slough and south to Lombard Avenue. The resolution also affects new students in other grades living in this area. Transportation will be provided for students living one mile or more from Peninsula School.
Students currently attending other schools may attend Peninsula if they wish. The middle school in this area will continue to be Ockley Green and high school students will continue to have the choice to enroll in Roosevelt or Jefferson-Middle College for Advanced Studies.
If you have questions about the boundary change you may call the Enrollment and Transfer office at 503-916-3205.

Later this year, DBRAC will begin looking at additional boundary changes and program moves for the 2018-19 school year, as part of the opening of Harriet Tubman and Roseway Heights Middle Schools. PPS will keep you informed if there are any new changes proposed for Ockley Green or feeder schools.
