Roosevelt inaugurates new softball field with no-hitter
What better way to dedicate a new softball field than to pitch a no-hitter? Roosevelt senior Grace Ferres did just that in the Roughriders’ opener at the high school’s new softball field. It was the first game on campus since 1972. Oh, and Roosevelt scored 15 runs to beat Cleveland.
Most likely to succeed: William Hilliard, Benson High School, 1945
Bill Hilliard started as a copy boy at The Oregonian in 1954 and retired as the newspaper’s editor in 1994 after a groundbreaking career. He became the paper's first black reporter; the country’s first black city editor of a major, mainstream newspaper; and the first black editor of such a paper. In 1993 he became first African-American to be named president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
