Sports Update: Grant Girls Soccer Team Makes History by Winning First State Title
11/18/2021The Grant High School girls soccer team made history Saturday, winning the first state championship in program history. In a back-and-forth game in the Class 6A final at Hillsboro Stadium, senior Elle Frazier scored 5 minutes, 19 seconds into overtime to give the Generals a 4-3 win over Beaverton.
Frazier scored from 12 yards out off a long pass from junior Katarina Roesinger as Grant won the third state championship in girls soccer for a Portland Interscholastic League team. The Generals joined Lincoln, which won titles in 2007 and 2008, in a sport that has had a state championship in Oregon since 1977.
Frazier also scored an unassisted goal 7:40 into the game and assisted on a goal by freshman Kate Ratanaproeksa that gave Grant a 2-0 lead at 11:52. The performance capped a stellar season in which Frazier was voted the PIL player of the year.
“She’s been fantastic throughout the year,” Grant coach Emmanuil Tjuanakis told reporters. “She has been a player that can put the team on her back and that was evident today.”
Beaverton came back by scoring two goals before halftime, and after a scoreless second half, the teams went to overtime tied 2-2.
Overtime started with a wild swing as Roesinger scored an unassisted goal just 1:43 into the extra period. Beaverton tied the game 41 seconds later, setting the stage for Frazier's winning goal.
“It’s insane,” Frazier said. “First win in program history. It’s what we wanted. It’s crazy.”
The victory finished a season in which Grant went 17-1-1 and won the PIL title with a 5-0-1 league record under Tjuanakis, who shared the PIL coach of the year award with Cleveland's Douglas Diller. Entering the championship game, the Generals had scored 56 goals while allowing just six after posting four consecutive shutouts in the playoffs.
Grant was making its second appearance in a state championship game. In 2010, the Generals lost to Jesuit 2-1 in overtime. Grant has one other state championship in soccer as this year’s team joins the 2010 boys team that beat Westview 3-1 in the final.
