    Before & After School

    Dear Glencoe Families,

Our teachers have introduced the 12 Tools of Toolbox to our students this week. As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, these are the tools that reside inside all of us. This coming week your child wild be learning The Breathing Tool. The breathing tool helps to remind us to take deep cleansing breaths to pause and calm yourself so you can approach a situation from a new, thoughtful perspective. When learned well, the Breathing Tool can become a lifetime strategy for dealing calmly with life’s challenges. Next week we will send home more information about this tool and a home activity that you can do together with your child.

Please start spreading the word! Our first Kindergarten Connection is two weeks away; on Wednesday, February 6th at 6:00 pm. This is the time when our incoming (2019-20) Kinder Families (adults only) attend an information session to learn about Glencoe; what our school community has to offer and most importantly, what our kindergarten program is all about. We do have a second Kindergarten Connect Session in May and that is for families who are committed to coming to Glencoe. We invite families to bring their incoming Kinder student for a brief taste of kindergarten. Students attend a classroom activity while parents complete a survey about their child to help us best prepare for their arrival. I am so excited to see who will be joining our community next year.

Have a wonderful weekend and remember; there is no school on Monday (in observance of MLK Jr. Day) AND there is no school on Tuesday, which is a Teacher Planning Day.

    Warm Regards,

    Lori Clark

    Glencoe Principal

2019 TAG testing for Glencoe will be on February 5th & 7th. If your child requires additional testing for TAG identification (that's everyone who filled out the nomination form and did not take the SBAC), a proctor will be pulling students from class on these 2 days. The proctor makes the schedule.  We do not have exact information of time(s) and day(s) for your specific child. So, it's important that your child is at school on time for both of these dates.

Please contact the office if your child will be absent from school for any reason. Teachers have very limited abilities with attendance, only office staff can change attendance codes. This will help prevent getting an auto-dialer attendance message.

We are going to place a special scrip order on Monday.
In case you don't know what scrip is, scrip means gift cards. Many retailers offer schools gift cards at a discount. For example, if you buy a $100 gift card to Fred Meyer (also works at QFC), you pay $100 and get $100 to Fred Meyer. Fred Meyer sells us that $100 card for $95, and that extra five dollars goes to Glencoe. There are many retailers to choose from including restaurants, groceries etc. Please take a look at the form below, some of the places you shop regularly may offer scrip to benefit our school!

Orders need to be received by noon on Monday, January 21st. Text or email your order to shanon.schlegel@gmail.com or 503-957-3852.

For those of you who have not had the chance to attend a Glencoe Foundation auction before, please know it’s a fun event for a really great cause. There’s something for everyone, and if nothing else, there’s a tasty fajita dinner and two wine/beer tickets included with your event tickets, along with wine on the tables. Come help the school raise money for staffing!

OBOB is underway! Practice sessions are being held during Tues/Wed 4th and 5th grade recess and are going well. Teams are collaborating and answering sample questions. Next week we’ll include mock battles and go over battle rules. Battles will be held in early February. Keep posted for a volunteer sign up in Konstella. We need your help to have a great OBOB--for each battle we’ll need a moderator, timekeeper, and judge. The team with the most points at the end of the battles goes on to the Regional OBOB battle!  If you want to practice at home, there are sample questions available on multiple websites, here are two: https://www.newbergoregon.gov/library/page/oregon-battle-books-obob and  https://library.cedarmill.org/kids/obob/. If you have questions or want to help out, contact Leslie Arndt (lesjwyg@gmail.com) or Dana Cofer (dana.cofer@gmail.com).

    Toddler Storytime is Back!

We are happy to welcome Glencoe siblings, ages 0-5/not yet in kindergarten, to the Library for a short storytime and book checkout beginning February 6th and each subsequent Wednesday from 8:00 - 8:30. Very casual- Just show up after you drop your student off, we'll share a book or two, and then you'll have time to help your young one choose a book to check out and take home. Parents can meet up with old friends, or make new connections, too. I'm looking forward to meeting our future Glencoenians! Please contact me if you have any questions at all. dnewtonp@pps.net (Ms.) Diane
