    Dear Glencoe Families,

    We are quickly approaching the month of February – unbelievable! You can expect to receive your report cards on Friday, February 1st. They will be coming home in your child’s backpack. Please review these to understand where your child is in relation to their grade level expectations. If your child receives specialized instruction from one of our learning center teachers or works with Ms. Chris for reading support, you can expect to receive progress notes from that teacher as well. If you have questions or concerns please reach out to the teacher. PPS does not reserve days for winter or spring conferences so you will need to contact your child’s teacher directly.

    Late January/early February is when our staff and Site Council review our mid-year data. Our next Site Council Meeting is Monday, February 4th at 3:00 PM. We are still a few months away from state testing, but we are just weeks away from the Successful Schools Survey. We only get this data every other year and it is invaluable for us to measure progress towards our school goal of families feeling welcomed and valued in our school. We rely on this information as it helps guide changes we make to our school-wide climate plan, our school procedures and our communication strategies with families. The survey is completely anonymous, AND for the first time we will get the results back in before the end of the year. Please keep an eye out for more important announcements regarding the Successful Schools Survey.

    Last but not least, I will be in New York City next week for a fabulous professional learning opportunity. I am attending a coaching institute focused on effective practices in writing workshops. I will have a retired principal, Liz Casson-Taylor, subbing for me during my time away. Liz is an effective administrator who finished her career as the principal of Beaumont Middle School. I know you all will make her feel welcome and part of our community while she is here. I will be checking my email periodically, but emergencies should be directed to Liz in my absence.

    Our first Connect to Kindergarten will be February 6, 2019 at 6:00 PM. This is for parents only of incoming kinders.


    2019 TAG testing for Glencoe will be on February 5th & 7th. If your child requires additional testing for TAG identification (that's everyone who filled out the nomination form and did not take the SBAC), a proctor will be pulling students from class on these 2 days. The proctor makes the schedule.  We do not have exact information of time(s) and day(s) for your specific child. So, it's important that your child is at school on time for both of these dates.


    Please contact the office if your child will be absent from school for any reason. Teachers have very limited abilities with attendance, only office staff can change attendance codes. This will help prevent getting an auto-dialer attendance message.

    Class Gift

    It's not too late!  Deadline to donate for a class gift has been extended to Monday, January 28.  If you can't find your envelope, just write the grade on any envelope and drop it at the office (or send with your kiddo to your teacher). It would be excellent to have everyone contribute!  Consider a donation of $1 or $5 or $10, whatever is comfortable for you. Make sure to participate in this great way to support the school. 

    Last Chance Donations

    Have you been sitting on a great idea for a donation of item or service to the auction?    The donation deadline is officially today, January 25, but we can still accept donations next week. Fill out the online donation form now: online donor form

    Wall of Wine donations

    The committee is currently accepting donated bottles of wine with a value of $15 or more for the Wall of Wine. Committee members will be out in front of the school accepting drive-up and walk-up donations during pick-up and drop-off on January 31 and February 1.

    Toddler Storytime is Back!

    We are happy to welcome Glencoe siblings, ages 0-5/not yet in kindergarten, to the Library for a short storytime and book checkout beginning February 6th and each subsequent Wednesday from 8:00 - 8:30. Please sign in at the office after you drop your student off and we'll share a book or two, and then you'll have time to help your young one choose a book to check out and take home. Parents can meet up with old friends, or make new connections. I'm looking forward to meeting our future Glencoenians!     STEAM Night is Friday, May 17, 2019 at 5:30 PM. The February meeting is cancelled, our next meeting is March 7th from 2:30-3:30 PM in the library. Not able to attend the meetings but have really good ideas and/or access to potential resources for this event?  Contact Amanda Shwetzer OR Lisa Davidson.


    OBOB is underway! Practice sessions are being held during Tues/Wed 4th and 5th grade recess and are going well. Teams are collaborating and answering sample questions. Next week we’ll include mock battles and go over battle rules. Battles will be held in early February. Keep posted for a volunteer sign up in Konstella. We need your help to have a great OBOB--for each battle we’ll need a moderator, timekeeper, and judge. The team with the most points at the end of the battles goes on to the Regional OBOB battle!  If you want to practice at home, there are sample questions available on multiple websites, here are two: https://www.newbergoregon.gov/library/page/oregon-battle-books-obob and https://library.cedarmill.org/kids/obob/.
