Arts report: Franklin High sophomore wins Portland Jazz Festival poster contest
3/4/2019Franklin High School sophomore Sophia Nguyen won the annual PDX Jazz Festival poster contest and will have her work used in promotional material for the 2020 festival.
Nguyen and other students from the Portland area were asked to produce a 12-inch square art piece, meant to replicate an album cover. Unlike previous years, when the winner’s submission would be used as that year’s promotional poster, the PDX Jazz Festival will target 2020 to allow more time to display the work of Sophia other places in the contest.
The contest was part of the Jazz in the Schools program that introduces students in the Portland area to the American music form. Nguyen’s art teacher at Franklin is Srule Bachman.
Last year, Edith Crever, then a seventh-grader at Ockley Green Middle School, won the poster contest.
HEART of Portland set: The 2019 version of PPS’s annual arts showcase will kick off on Tuesday, April 16, with a reception at the Portland Art Museum. The reception starts a two-week run of displays and performances that will include an exhibit of 150 visual arts pieces by students, and performing arts programming from schools in every cluster.
HEART of Portland, which will be held for the fifth year, is a showcase of the vast variety of visual and performing arts in PPS, made possible by funding by the Arts Education and Access Income Tax, also known as the Portland Arts Tax.
Grants students at Nikkei Center: Students from Grant High School’s digital media program will present reimagined logos from Japanese American groups from Portland during a two-month exhibition at the Oregon Nikkei Center (121 NW 2nd Ave.), which serves as Portland’s Japanese American history museum. Students, who worked with Grant teacher Lynn Yarne, reworked past logos from Portland Japantown businesses, sports teams and other organizations.
To kick off the exhibition, the center will host a First Thursday reception on March 7 from 3-6 p.m., then a reception for the Friends of Oregon Nikkei Endowment and Grant family members on Saturday, March 9, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Visitors will be able to see the exhibit until May 5.
