Board unveils new format for public hearing on district budget
4/23/2019The Portland Public School Board of Education will unveil a new format to take feedback and answer questions about district finances and processes as part of the process of vetting and approving the 2019-20 budget.
PPS officials will present the proposed 2019-20 budget to the Board at its meeting on Tuesday, April 23, then will hold two public hearings to gather feedback from students, parents and the community. The first will be held on Tuesday, April 30 at Faubion School (2930 NE Dekum St.). The hearing, which will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m., will utilize a “world café” format with 10 different stations at which different topics will be presented and discussed.
The second meeting, on Tuesday, May 14, will be held in the Board Room at the district office from 6-8 p.m. It will use a more a traditional format in which community members provide public comment.
The meeting at Faubion will start with a Board welcome and introduction, then a budget overview by Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero and Deputy Superintendents Yvonne Curtis and Claire Hertz. Staff will then present an overview of the format before the hearing breaks into these stations:
- The PPS budget document
- Advocating for better school funding
- Racial Equity and Social Justice
- Curriculum development and implementation
- Strengthening Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
- Differentiated school supports
- Enhanced Special Education services
- School modernization
- General topics, executive administration and Board office budget
- Public comment section, video and message
Station 2 will be staffed by the Portland Association of Teachers. The other stations will have senior district administrators and staff. Each station will include a recorder to capture the conversation, with those records provided to the Board to inform their decision making.
There will be three rounds of sessions for each station, starting with a 5-minute orientation, followed by 20 minutes of conversation between staff and community members. Attendees will be encouraged to visit different stations, but are welcome to remain at one station. Interpreters, food and child care (for children ages 4 and older) will be provided.
