• Hayhurst Community Letter in Support of Our Asian American and Pacific Islander Community

    Hayhurst Community,

As your principal, I want to write to you all to denounce the acts of hate and violence we have yet again witnessed this week in our country and within the past year. The violence that has occurred to our Asian American community in Atlanta is horrendous and my heart goes out to the friends and families that have lost their mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.

We all must work together to support our Asian American and Pacific Islander students and to help stop the hundreds of years of oppression, racism and violence toward our Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. We must stand together in support of one another and speak out against racism. We also must do our part to report any discriminatory acts, harassment and violence.

As we prepare to return to in-person learning, it’s extremely important for our Asian American and Pacific Islander students to know that they’re coming back to a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment. I love our Hayhurst community and how supportive we are of one another. We will continue to work together to create a warm and welcoming environment for our students and families, one in which everyone feels safe and their voices heard. If hate or racism happens in our community we will take every action necessary to eliminate this behavior.

At Hayhurst Elementary School we will strive to ensure all students and staff are safe from any form of racially charged acts or injustices. If you are aware of any acts of racial abuse, discrimination, hate or injustice reach out to us so we can continue to work together to build a strong, caring, and inclusive community. Please take care of yourselves and your family, and let us know if there is anything we can do to support you. If any of you need supports please feel free to reach out to me, our school counselor Roxanne Davidson at rdavidson@pps.net or our Social Worker Mr. Ryan at rydicker@pps.net.

Thank you for standing with our Asian American and Pacific Islander students and families.

    Tara M. Bourland, Hayhurst Principal
