Art Pieces and Performances by PPS Students Will Be Showcased in 2 Events
6/3/2021Dear PPS Families and Staff,
As we complete this most unique school year, we want to recommend two events being staged by the PPS Visual & Performing Arts department to showcase art pieces and performances by the creative students of Portland Public Schools.
HeART of Portland: A limited version of our annual showcase is now available for in-person and online viewing. More than 200 PPS students contributed pieces guided by the theme "Postcard to the Earth," inspired by the work of Ansel Adams, the seminal American photographer. The pieces are being displayed from June 1 to June 30 in the Portland Art Museum gift shop in conjunction with the museum’s current Ansel Adams exhibit.
The PPS pieces are viewable at no cost through the gift shop window (outside the museum in the main courtyard), and guests can also get a closer look and inside admission with a ticket to the Adams exhibit. All students 18 and under have free admission to the museum, but will need to reserve tickets ahead of time. Please see the Portland Art Museum website to purchase/reserve tickets and to see updated days and hours, and information on mask requirements and capacity restrictions.
The student pieces also are available for online viewing. Scan the available QR code on the display flyer to view on your phone, or go directly to the online display to view on a computer. You can also see selected student works from many PPS schools in a special virtual exhibition during the month of June at www.ppsartgallery.com.
Spring Showcase: The district’s performing artists will join the visual artists for an online showcase on Thursday, June 10 starting at 7 p.m. The Spring Showcase will feature PPS students in dance, music and theatre performances, as well as visual arts pieces from every neighborhood cluster in the district.
The event will be viewable on the PPS YouTube page and the district’s Facebook page. The showcase will also be available for later viewing on the PPS YouTube page.
In the past, these two events have been part of one large live event, with the showcase serving as the rousing opener for the HeART of Portland, and we hope to return to that format next year. But even with the changes during the pandemic, one thing has remained constant: the abundance of artistic energy in PPS students. We encourage you to partake in one or both of these events to see how true that is.
