Orgullo Latino celebrates 2017 graduates
6/6/2017Portland Public Schools honored around 125 Latino high school graduates at the first Orgullo Latino or Latino Pride celebration. District-wide there are more than 400 Latino graduates in the class of 2017. The event was held on June 2nd in the new Roosevelt High School Auditorium.
Keynote speaker, Assistant Superintendent Antonio Lopez, showed pictures of his childhood while sharing the story of his own challenging adolescence. His inspirational message was one of hope. Lopez encouraged the graduates to persevere through turbulent times and to always believe in themselves.
Dr. Julie Esparza- Brown, a member of the Portland School Board and a speaker at Orgullo Latino, left these words of urgency to the students: “Go out into the wide world and remember who you are, where you came from, and all that you have been taught by your family, teachers and community and work to leave things a little better.”
Interim-Superintendent, Bob McKean kicked off the night with welcoming remarks. Senior director for the office of College/Career Readiness, Oscar Moreno Gilson was the Master of Ceremonies and interpreter for the bilingual event.
Honored guests included former Portland Mayor Tom Potter and Ron Herndon, Director of Albina Head Start and Board Chairman of the National Head Start Association. The new Roosevelt auditorium was filled to the brim with families and friends celebrating the accomplishments of the graduates and their bright futures.
This event was a stupendous success with live music from Roosevelt’s very own Banda Latino, student speakers Julio Lopez-Hernandez and Astrid Palacios-Patricio and poet Fidel Gonzales, phenomenal food, and great speakers.
