Announcing new leaders in Office of Teaching and Learning
7/18/2018Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that we have hired three new leaders for our academic team.
Dr. Sarah Davis will serve as the Senior Director of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics). Gretchen Schlag joins us as Director of Elementary Humanities. And Dr. Aurora Terry is our new Senior Director of College and Career Readiness.
Dr. Sarah Davis has more than 24 years of experience working with students to deepen their understanding of STEAM concepts and with teachers to develop pedagogies that work from the students’ perspective. Dr. Davis came to PPS in 2016 from Education Northwest, where she worked on math-focused projects through the Northwest Comprehensive Center. Prior to that she was a Mathematics Education faculty member at the College of Charleston and spent six years at Singapore’s National Institute of Education, the only teacher-certification institution in Singapore, as a Learning Sciences & Technologies faculty member and researcher. She is motivated by a deeply held belief that all students can be successful in STEAM.
An educator for 21 years, Gretchen Schlag started her career in Georgia before moving to Oregon at the Beaverton School District. In Beaverton, she worked as a K-5 reading specialist, instructional coach and intervention specialist. She moved to PPS for a year, working as an assistant principal, before moving to the Forest Grove School District as a principal and district behavior coordinator. Gretchen has also worked at Concordia University since 2008, teaching reading endorsement and action research courses, and has also worked for Oregon State University as an adjunct professor.
Dr. Aurora Terry comes to PPS from San Antonio, Texas, where she served as principal of a Title I AVID National Demonstration School. She previously served as the Director of Linked Learning and Manager in the CTE department in the Houston Independent School District. Dr. Terry began her career in education teaching history abroad in Tampico, Mexico, and Cartagena, Colombia. During her time in Houston, Dr. Terry served as a classroom teacher, gifted and talented magnet and International Baccalaureate Program coordinator, and assistant principal. Dr. Terry believes in a holistic approach to education and is dedicated to providing all students access to rigorous academic programs with real world applications.
Please join me in welcoming these new leaders to our PPS community.
