Superintendent Guerrero adds four to his leadership team
2/16/2018Portland Public Schools has added four members to Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero’s leadership team.
Luis Valentino has been hired as Chief Academic Officer, Jim Scherzinger will serve as Interim Chief Financial Officer, Ryan Dutcher as Interim Budget Director, and Stephanie Cameron is the new Senior Director, Communications and Public Affairs.
“Realizing our ambitious strategic goals will require the best leadership,” Guerrero said. “Every talented leader we bring to Portland Public Schools represents a step forward in how we can support the critical work of our educators and provide our students the experiences they need and deserve.”
Valentino has worked with PPS as a consultant since December and has played a central role in stabilizing the curriculum and instruction department. Valentino worked with Guerrero when he was Associate Superintendent/Chief Academic Officer for the San Francisco Unified School District. Valentino will report to Deputy Superintendent Yvonne Curtis.
“Luis is a collaborative leader who understands how to build and direct a teaching and learning department, so that a school system has the organizational capacity to provide the necessary instructional guidance to schools, educators, and leaders,” Guerrero said.
Scherzinger returns to PPS, having previously served as Superintendent and CFO. His appointment come as budget-building season kicks into gear and the district is moving to assess its budget and finance operations.
Scherzinger, who has also had executive roles in the Oregon Legislature and Oregon Department of Human Services, will report directly to Guerrero.
“The district is already benefiting from Jim’s financial expertise and his comprehensive understanding of PPS systems, culture, people and practices,” Guerrero said. “Jim is deeply committed to public service and public education, and we are fortunate to have him on board.”
Dutcher, who will serve on Scherzinger’s team, also returns to the district, having twice served as interim CFO. Like Scherzinger, Dutcher’s familiarity with PPS is sure to be an asset as the district builds next year’s budget, Guerrero said.
“Ryan is an outstanding professional, and I’m grateful for his dedication and desire to contribute to PPS’s transformation by helping to ensure effective management of public resources,” Guerrero said.
Cameron comes to PPS from the Oregon Zoo, where she served as Director of Communications and Marketing for the last seven years. Cameron, who will report to Chief of Staff Stephanie Soden, will lead the communications team and shape how the district tells its stories and amplifies students’ voices.
“We all share a strong interest in communicating effectively with our stakeholders,” Guerrero said.
