Free health care is available to PPS students
9/11/2018The health of students is a priority in Portland Public Schools, and thanks to some of our community partners, the district is able to provide health care at little at no cost. Here are the options:
The Multnomah County Health Department currently has seven of its Student Health Centers located on PPS campuses. The centers are open to any school-age resident of Multnomah County and offer an array of services, including physicals, immunizations, routine lab tests, prescriptions, mental health services, and vision and dental screenings.
The centers can essentially serve as a student’s primary care provider, with both appointments and walk-in service available. The centers do take insurance for students who have it, but will see any child regardless of ability to pay, with no out-of-pocket cost.
In PPS, the centers are located at these high schools: Cleveland, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison and Roosevelt. Grant, which is being rebuilt (students are attending classes on the Marshall High campus), will have a center next school year, when the campus re-opens. There are also centers at Cesar Chavez K-8 and George Middle School. Centers at Harrison Park K-8 and Lane Middle School closed at the end of the 2017-18 school year.
Centers are also open at three non-PPS high schools in Multnomah County (Centennial, David Douglas and Parkrose), and PPS students are welcome to utilize them. For center hours and other information, see the Multnomah County Health Center website.
Another option is the Benson High School Wellness Center that is staffed by Oregon Health Sciences University, with a Multnomah County mental health provider, school nurse and social worker also available. Although the center primarily serves the Benson community, all PPS students are welcome. See the center’s webpage for hours.
Also, students at Faubion K-8 have access to the Kaiser Permanente 3 to PhD Wellness Center, part of sharing the campus with Kaiser, Concordia University and Trillium Family Services.
PPS will lose one of its free health services when the Creston Dental Clinic closes Nov. 1. The clinic, located at the K-8 school’s campus, has provided free dental care for students in Multnomah County since 2010. Clinic directors said the need for free dental care has fallen with the advent of the Affordable Care Act.
