Leaders from Beaverton, Baltimore join PPS as Deputy Superintendent, Chief of Schools
6/27/2018Portland Public Schools Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero has hired two educational leaders to play major roles in the district’s senior leadership team. Claire Hertz will serve as Deputy Superintendent for Business and Operations, and Dr. Kregg Cuellar will join the district as Chief of Schools, the district announced.
“I believe Claire and Kregg will bring a proven track record and a caliber of leadership that will play an integral part in the transformation of Oregon’s largest school district,” Guerrero said.
Hertz comes to PPS from the Beaverton School District, where she served in a number of roles, most recently Chief Financial Officer. She has built a strong trail of success in managing finances and leading operations for school districts, including spearheading school bond efforts. She has worked previously for school districts in Newberg, Parkrose and Roseburg.
Hertz will oversee key departments in PPS: business and operations; finance and accounting; school modernization; facilities management; and technology.
“We are very pleased that Claire has chosen to bring her locally and nationally recognized expertise to PPS. She has the ability to establish systems and practices to support a complex district like ours so we can deliver better student outcomes.” Guerrero said.
Dr. Cuellar comes to PPS from Baltimore Public Schools, where he served as Community Superintendent for the country’s 25th-largest school district, and directed the central office personnel and 25 principals. His educational career has included stints as a teacher, college professor and district administrator in Virginia, Rhode Island, Texas and Maryland.
The hiring of Dr. Cuellar completes the instructional wing of Superintendent Guerrero’s leadership team. He will work under Dr. Yvonne Curtis, Deputy Superintendent of Instruction and School Communities, alongside Luis Valentino, Chief Academic Officer, and Brenda Martinek, Chief Student Support Officer. Dr. Cuellar will lead and direct area assistant superintendents, directors and principals.
“Kregg is deeply experienced and respected for his school and school system transformation work, and he will build a committed and accountable leadership structure here that enables principals to be instructional leaders who deliver on our promise to every student,” Guerrero said. “He has family ties to the Pacific Northwest and is excited about moving to our beautiful city.”
The district’s leadership continues to build out its team, with additional hiring announcements forthcoming.
Portland Public Schools serves more than 49,000 students, from pre-kindergarten through high school, in 79 schools. Founded in 1851, it is the largest school district in the state of Oregon.
