• Groundbreaking set for Madison, Kellogg construction projects

    The start of construction on a modernized Madison High School and new Kellogg Middle School is only a few weeks away. To celebrate, upcoming groundbreaking ceremonies will take place at both locations. These two schools are the first major construction projects funded by the May 2017 Bond.

    Madison

    When: Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m.
    Where: Front entrance, Madison High School, 2735 NE 82nd Ave.

    Highlights: U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero and former major league pitcher Kent Bottenfield (a Madison graduate) will be the featured speakers. The ceremony will be followed by Alumni Association events and tours of the campus. A family fun run will precede the ceremony starting at 9 a.m.

    Project facts: In 2021, a fully modernized, 292,000-square-foot Madison High School will reopen with a capacity for 1,700 students. The 21st century learning environment will serve Portland’s most diverse student population who speak over 30 languages. The Madison modernization will include over 170,000 square feet of new construction, including a theater, commons and gym, that will blend seamlessly with the historic, mid-century modern building.

    Kellogg

    Kellogg rendering When: Saturday, June 1, 10-11:30 a.m.
    Where: Kellogg campus, 6909 SE Powell Blvd.

    Highlights: Speakers, local dignitaries and music will add to the festive atmosphere. The event will also provide the public an opportunity to meet the project team and learn more about the new school.

    Project facts: The Kellogg site will be the first entirely new school building in Southeast Portland in many decades and will provide students and staff with a state-of-the-art middle school facility. It will include over 100,000 square feet of new construction, including a performing arts stage, a multi-purpose gym and assembly space, a large, flexible commons space, and dedicated outdoor learning spaces. The school will be a focal point of its neighborhood, offering a new educational center and resource hub for the community.
