    Running Late

If your child is more than 10 minutes late to school (after 8:10), please walk them into the office and sign them into school. Thank you for your help with this.

    Site Council

Maplewood is currently looking for parent volunteers to join the new Maplewood Site Council for the 2022-2023 school year. If you are interested, please email me at kgalloway@pps.net. We will have our first meeting at the end of this school year to look at the school’s improvement plan for next year. Meetings will be held once a month after school from 2:30 - 3:30. Dates TBD. For more information on what the Site Council does, click HERE.

Maplewood Open House and End of Year Picnic

We are aware that this school year has been particularly challenging for parents because they have not been in their child(ren)’s classroom. We would like to invite you to the Maplewood Open House on May 19th where families can visit their child(ren)’s classroom from 5:30 - 6:00. Following the Open House, throw a blanket on the field and join us for a community picnic from 6:00 - 7:00. Foundation will have food trucks available or you can bring your picnic dinner. We look forward to opportunities like this to bring our community back together again. Mark your calendars! (The rain date will be May 26th.)

Grade 5: Oaks Park Safety Patrol

Thank you to all the Grade 5 students for their help with keeping our school safe with their Crossing Guard duty and being Conflict Managers at recess. To thank our grade 5 students, they will go to Oaks Park on June 2nd.  No lunch needed because Portland Police provide and serve lunch to students.  Ride bracelets are provided for students for rides only - no Roller Skating,  Go Carts or the Newest  Roller Coaster.   Students and Teachers will take a field trip bus departing at 9:30am and returning to school at 2:00pm.  Chaperones will need to meet at Oaks Park. Thank you again 5th graders! YOU made a difference at Maplewood this year!

    Field Day

Field day is planned for Monday, June 6th. Thanks to PTA we will also have a bouncy house for field day this year. We can’t wait to get out and have a blast together as a school.  (Rain day is Wednesday, June 8th.)

    Ms. Weatherill/Field day:

SAVE THE DATE - A volunteer sign up will be sent out in the next newsletter. The grades K-2 field day will take place in the morning around 9-10:15 and I'll ask volunteers to add about 20 minutes on each side to help. Grades 3-5 field day will be in the afternoon from 12:45-2 and I'll also ask for extra time on each end to help. Thanks for your support!

    Kindergarten Connect

Do you know any upcoming Kindergarteners in our area? Please invite them to our “All About Kindergarten” presentation on Thursday, April 21 · 6:00 – 6:30pm. (Video call link: https://meet.google.com/pwc-zpuq-rcf) Ms. Thomas and Ms. Riscol and I will share all about what it is like to be in Kindergarten at Maplewood. Attendees will learn about our curriculum, our staff and how to help your child be prepared for kindergarten. We look forward to seeing you there!

    Earth Day at Maplewood

Thanks to Monica Smiley and Andrea Beyer, the Garden Committee has arranged for many ways Maplewood will be celebrating Earth Day. Some first and second grade classes will have visiting presentations from The Audubon Society. Grade 3 is getting digital cameras and photo paper to do a visual native plant project. Fourth grade is planning to plant some camas during their recess to align with their Indigenous first foods curriculum. 5th grade is getting bird feeders and field guides.  And on top of all that, the Garden Committee is planning to do a natural areas clean up and planting event on the 24th. Thank you again to the Garden Committee for all of this work and support of our student’s learning about our planet.

    OBOB

Thank you to the leaders and volunteers of OBOB. Our students are so excited about the competitions and it seems there is always someone checking out the OBOB bracket in the hall. A special thank you to Dana Reber, Heather Jones, Judy Reed, Elin Kordahl and all the parent volunteers who have worked diligently to pull this off.

    PTA’s Parent and Pastries:

PTA will be providing pastries and coffee for parents in the gym on the first Wednesday of the month for the remainder of the school year. (May 4th, June 1st - 7:45 - 8:15.) After you drop your child off at school, join us in the gym. Our community has been isolated for a long time and with COVID protocols loosening, we feel now is a good time to start reconnecting with each other. Mark your calendars and join us!

    Lunch under tents?

This spring, when the weather improves, do you feel we should move our lunches to the tents outside? We will have the tents for the remainder of the school year.  Please let me know your preference HERE. Thanks!

    Student Class Placement

We take class placement very seriously at Maplewood. Ensuring that we place a student with the proper teacher in a balanced community is our goal and we will be using a very systematic process to do so.

Your child’s teacher knows your child very well; they know their strengths, how they learn, and what they need to meet their potential. With all this knowledge, teachers will work diligently in their Professional Learning Community (PLC) meeting, along with Morgan Whitney, to place students in a class for next year. Teachers will not place students based on a specific teacher, rather they will place them on the characteristics of the next year’s teachers and match them with the needs of each individual student (ex: great classroom management, loves to do art projects, etc…)

These initial class lists will then be reviewed by each specialist teacher, our special education teacher, our school psychologist, our counselor and social worker and myself. Using this process, we are able to tap into all the knowledge of the staff who know your child, in addition to their teacher. Once balanced class communities are created, I will assign a teacher to the class lists.

Please know, this means that we do not accept teacher requests for placing your child in a class for next year.  If, for some reason, you feel there is pertinent information that we do not already know which will affect how your child should be placed, please let us know by filling out THIS form no later than May 6th.

    FOUNDATION

    Direct Giving Campaign

Shortly after we return from spring break the Maplewood Foundation will begin our Direct Giving Campaign to hire EAs for next year. Currently there is enough money to hire 1 part-time EA. Our goal is to hire at least one more EA which means we will need to dig deep into those pockets and raise around $20,000. I feel confident that with one more EA we will be able to run a similar program as we have done this year. If you are impatient and just want to give now, please follow this link to donate: http://www.maplewoodfoundation.com/donate/

    OSHU Screening Program

Based on the numbers of tests OHSU processes for PPS each week, there are many families who are enrolled and do not participate in the Screening Testing Program. If you could please return any UNOPENED sample collection kits to be used by others who are still using this resource, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you would like for your child to be removed from the program please let the office know and we can remove them from the list of students that receive weekly test kits.  If at any time you would like to re-enroll just let the office know and they can be easily added back.

    COVID

    COVID Protocol Updates:

This is our first week with optional masking; this is for students, teachers and visitors. There are a few other key updates to our COVID protocols:

    • Physical Distancing is no longer mandated. OHA and ODE (via Ready Schools Safe Learners) recommend: “striving for at least 3 feet between students to the extent possible.”

    • Effective March 12 all of Oregon will pause contract tracing and quarantine for the general population, including K-12 settings.

    • The Daily Illness Self-Screening Checklist has been updated to better reflect ODE/OHA definitions of illness, and more updates will be added next week once all guidance is finalized.

    From the School Counselor

Each day I give out prizes to students who are working on specific goals.  My prize box gets depleted quickly.  If you'd like to donate any prizes (party favors, bouncy balls, stickers, fancy pencils, small figurines, matchbox cars, etc.) I would love to repurpose those items by putting them in my prize box.  If you don't have any of those little items in your home but would like to donate, visit my Amazon wishlist HERE . No need to donate, but if you are able and would like to, I would gladly receive these items to replenish the prize box.

    Take care.

    Notes from the Kitchen

Hello Friends. My freezer is down again. This means that I may have to change what I'm serving. I may be adding entrees or changing entrees. For example, if I don't cook all the pizza in a case on Thursday, I'll have to cook the rest on Friday.  A work order has been placed, but I have no idea when the freezer will be fixed. Please explain to your children that I have no control over this, and I appreciate their flexibility.

I also wanted to say a huge thank you for the lovely Classified Appreciation Week. It's nice to be recognized. I love being a part of our Maplewood community. Thank you for your support! As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

FREE/REDUCED PRICE MEAL APPLICATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY FOR FAMILIES

Did you know if families are eligible for free or reduced price meals, they may also receive other extended benefits, fee reductions or waivers? Even though all students may eat school meals at no cost this school year, students enrolled in a school NOT listed as a CEP site may be eligible for meal benefits. Students enrolled at any of the schools listed as a CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) site, do not need to apply for meal benefits. While the meal benefits application may mean eligibility for meal services and is processed through the Nutrition Services department, it can also mean further support or savings beyond food and nutrition. The current school year eligibility expires June 30, yet families receive a 30 day carry over into the new school year. The 30 days allow families time to submit a new application for the 2022-23 school year without incurring meal charges.

Families may be eligible for benefits through these options -

    • Directly certified through SNAP

    • Directly certified and identified through foster, migrant or McKinney Vento liaisons

    • By completing a meal benefit application based on income

To submit an online meal application, click here or visit https://www.pps.net/Page/2464

Proof of eligibility can be provided to families directly. Such requests should be emailed to mealbenefits@pps.net

We currently have a 90 day position open for someone to cover lunch duty. This runs from 10:45 - 1:15 daily. If you are interested, please contact kgalloway@pps.net as soon as possible. This is a much needed position now that we have indoor lunch.
