Maplewood Memo June 10, 20226/14/2022
Principal's Message June 09, 2022
Dear Maplewood Community,
Thank you for a wonderful and productive school year. I can’t thank everyone enough for your endless hours of volunteering, chaperoning, reading, organizing, donating and doing whatever was necessary to support students—both at home and at school. Special thanks to our PTA and Foundation, who, as usual, went above and beyond the call of duty to provide whatever was necessary to add to our students’ already rich school experience.
That experience could not occur without the endless energy, skills and devotion of the Maplewood staff. Thanks and well done to an incredible group of professionals.
A final word to Maplewood students: Thank you for all your hard work throughout the school year. I am so honored to be your principal; you make me proud to be a part of Maplewood Elementary School. You keep me laughing and young at heart. I am grateful for your joy, astute insights and amazing talents. Best wishes to our graduating fifth graders, whom I will miss greatly—please come back and visit.
Everyone has a safe and happy summer break.
Until next school year, here’s wishing you love, laughter and learning.
- June 10th - Last Day of School
Things to mark on your calendar:
Sneak Peak August 26, 11:30 - 12:00
This is a new event for Maplewood this year. We would love to have students have a sneak peek into their new classroom and meet their teacher before the first day of school. Teachers will be busily getting the classroom set up for students on this day so it will not be “Pinterest Ready” for this event. Stop by and say hello between 11:30 - 12:00. Teachers will need to shut their doors at noon for the PTA provided staff lunch, so it will be a quick hello.
Community Cares Project Aug 27 9-12
Come out and help get our school ready for another great year by cleaning up the grounds and playground area.

This community stepped up and help us raise over $42,000, with some funds still coming in helping to exceed our original goal to fund two part-time Educational Assistant positions for next year. We are excited about working with Principal Galloway, Maplewood teachers and staff, and our amazing school community to help create the future of your Foundation.

Your child may bring home their Chromebook for the summer IF you sign a permission slip stating that you will care for the device. More information will come from your teacher soon.
A reminder from the health room. Please pick up any medications that have been stored in the health room for your student by June 10, 2022, the last day of the school. OHSU COVID Summer Testing
Families who would like to continue testing but are not enrolled in summer academy can submit samples at their chosen summer academy site by dropping at office on identified weekly pickup day. Please include this language (or similar) in a message to families this week:
OHSU Screening testing will be supported for PPS students July 11th through August 5th. Samples will be collected at Summer Acceleration Academy sites on Wednesdays while Summer Acceleration Academy is in session. Please ensure that your students’ sample is in the office of your identified Summer Acceleration Academy site between 9 am and 11:30 am.
If your student is currently enrolled, and you need additional sample collection kits for the weeks of July 11th through August 5th, please contact your school office.
IMPORTANT REMINDER - BUS TRANSPORTATION (BY 7/31)
Just a reminder, starting Fall 2022 and moving forward, students will be able to register for Transportation during enrollment at the beginning of each school year. In order to capture the initial data, families will be receiving a survey to fill out that will eventually sync with Synergy to capture existing riders and routes.
The goal is to capture as much data as possible so that transportation office can begin routing for the next school year.
There is a Chromebook set up at Maplewood to ensure families will have access at the school to fill out the registration survey if they don’t have access at home.

FREE/REDUCED PRICE MEAL APPLICATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY FOR FAMILIES
Did you know if families are eligible for free or reduced price meals, they may also receive other extended benefits, fee reductions or waivers? Even though all students may eat school meals at no cost this school year, students enrolled in a school NOT listed as a CEP site may be eligible for meal benefits. Students enrolled at any of the schools listed as a CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) site, do not need to apply for meal benefits. While the meal benefits application may mean eligibility for meal services and is processed through the Nutrition Services department, it can also mean further support or savings beyond food and nutrition. The current school year eligibility expires June 30, yet families receive a 30 day carry over into the new school year. The 30 days allow families time to submit a new application for the 2022-23 school year without incurring meal charges.
Families may be eligible for benefits through these options -
Directly certified through SNAP
Directly certified and identified through foster, migrant or McKinney Vento liaisons
By completing a meal benefit application based on income
Proof of eligibility can be provided to families directly. Such requests should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
