Public invited to share ideas on education with lawmakers at Madison High event
9/17/2018Parents, educators and community members who have ideas about public education will have an opportunity to share them with a bipartisan group of state lawmakers at an event at Madison High School.
The Joint Interim Committee on Student Success, a group of 14 Oregon state legislators, will take public testimony on Thursday, Sept. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m., in Madison’s auditorium (2735 NE 82nd Ave.). Childcare will be provided, and interpretation will be available in Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Somali, Russian and sign language.
The event is part of a 10-stop statewide tour at which the committee is taking public testimony to help formulate a plan to improve public education and provide adequate funding for schools.
“We want to hear from Oregonians about what they want in their K-12 schools,” said Sen. Tim Knopp (R-Bend), a committee co-vice chair, said in a press release. “With that vision, the Legislature can work in partnership with our school districts to create an efficient education system that best serves our students.”
The committee is made up of members of the Oregon House of Representatives and Senate, and it has been touring the state to take testimony since March. The Madison event is the ninth of 10 stops on the tour.
Members of the public are invited to testify for two minutes per person. Signup sheets will be available at the auditorium starting at 6:30 p.m. Written testimony can also be sent to the committee via email at jcss.exhibits@oregonlegislature.gov.
