Cleveland girls soccer leads strong showing by PIL in academic all-state teams
12/10/2018For the second year in a row, Cleveland High School produced the top academic girls soccer team in the state. The Warriors finished with the highest cumulative grade-point average among not just Class 6A teams, but girls soccer teams in all classifications in Oregon in the OnPoint Community Credit Union Academic All-State Awards.
Cleveland’s 3.90 GPA finished just ahead of another Portland Interscholastic League team, Wilson, which finished No. 2 in both Class 6A and all classifications. Last year, Cleveland finished No. 1 among all girls soccer teams in the state with a 3.94 GPA.
The academic honor comes for a team that also had a successful year on the field. The Warriors finished first in the PIL for the second year in a row, tying Lincoln for the league title with a 4-0-2 record.
The award was part of strong showing by the PIL, which placed 20 teams on the academic all-state teams, an award for finishing in the top 10 for GPA in a classification. Three other PIL teams finished No. 1 in Class 6A for their sports: Wilson volleyball (3.84 GPA), Wilson boys soccer (3.65 GPA) and Franklin boys cross country (3.94 GPA).
