Sports update: Wilson’s Alex Slenning wins state in cross country; all-PIL awards announced
11/6/2017Alex Slenning became the first runner from Wilson High School to win a state cross country title after he outran the 140-runner field in the Class 6A boys championship in Eugene on Saturday.
Slenning, a senior, ran the 5,000-meter course at Lane Community College in 15 minutes, 41 seconds to win by 7 seconds. The win came a week after Slenning won his third consecutive Portland Interscholastic League title.
The state title was the first in boys cross country for a PIL runner since Ian Burgess of Franklin won the Class 5A title in 2010. The last PIL winner in Class 6A was Bryce Burgess of Franklin in 2007. Slenning’s championship was the 10th by a PIL runner in boys cross country.
Roosevelt senior Lammi Kalil joined Slenning in the top 10, finishing eighth in 15:59. Franklin followed its PIL team title with a third-place finish at Lane. Senior Will Eaton finished 22nd, junior Solomon Duke was 24th, and senior Simon Walsh finished 26th for the Quakers.
In the Class 6A girls race, Lincoln junior Kyla Becker was the top PIL finisher, taking 10th place. Grant freshman Annelies Quinton finished 17th, one spot ahead of Wilson junior Francesca Ierulli.

Lincoln, the No. 12 seed, will play top-seeded Jesuit at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a chance to advance to Saturday’s championship game. Jesuit is ranked No. 2 nationally by USA Today and has outscored its opponents 76-1 this season. Lincoln is the first PIL team to reach the state semifinals since Grant in 2012.
The other PIL team in Saturday’s quarterfinals, Grant, lost 2-1 at Sunset.
Boys soccer: The PIL will send a team to the 6A semifinals for the fourth consecutive season after Grant beat North Salem in dramatic fashion, winning 2-1 in a game that went to a shootout. The Generals won with a 6-5 advantage on penalty kicks.
Grant, the No. 3 seed, will play at No. 2 Westview at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Generals will try to become the third PIL team in four years to make the final; they would join the 2014 Grant team that lost in the championship game, and the 2015 Lincoln team that won the state title.
