Works by PPS art teachers chosen for exhibition
10/15/2018Art teachers in Portland Public Schools don’t just teach – many are artists in their own right. Four PPS teachers were among the 30 educators from Oregon selected to have their work displayed at the “Teachers as Artists – After the Demo” exhibition currently on display at the Maryhill Museum of Art in Goldendale, Wash.
The exhibition, presented in partnership with the Oregon Art Education Association, is juried -- meaning teachers have to apply and be selected – by Dana Carlyle-Kletchka, Assistant Professor of Art Museum Education at Ohio State University.
Jill Mitchell of Rieke Elementary School was given an honorable mention prize for her mixed-media-on-wood piece, “Succulent Study #2.” Mitchell also has another work, “Perfect Fruit,” in the exhibition.
Jamin London-Tinsel of Grant High School was given a Curator’s Choice award for her work, “Repair.” It was the second OAEA-related honor London-Tinsel has received the year, along with being named Secondary Art Teacher of the Year.
Two other PPS teachers had two works selected for display: Marie Pearson of Wilson High School, “The Trees of Eagle Creek” and “Me & Bee”; and Anna Mafchir of Vernon Elementary, “On a Walk in an Unforgettable Land,” and “Once Upon a Time.”
The exhibition, which opened Oct. 1, will remain on display until Nov. 15. See the Maryhill Museum website for hours and admission information.
