Hello, こんにちは, Kon'nichiwa Dear Richmond Community,
Happy October, 10月 - じゅう がつ, jū gatsu!
We did it - a whole month of in-person pandemic school after sooo many months of not that. Our students have gotten used to many school routines and also continue to align with what many-persons, in-school, in-masks, all-day, all-week learning looks and sounds like. We encourage families to review our Behavior Expectations Matrix with kiddos at home (especially Recess and Bathroom points where, not surprisingly, most of our challenging situations seem to be happening) and also reflect our school practices if you play on campus after-school or on the weekends. You’ll see that we have kept the Digital Spaces and pre-pandemic BEX all together here for reference - and of course added our student-voted ‘Be Kind’ to our traditional three Be’s: safe, respectful, and responsible. Please also remember that there is no school supervision after-school, and students should not remain on campus without a home-adult watching them for their own safety. Sadly, we do need to report that there have been multiple incidents at schools, including a very scary event at Kellogg MS this week that involved a student being chased (she ran away & police responded,) with adults in cars trying to communicate with and possibly entice students. We too have had a couple of drive-along-the-fence & try-to-talk-to-students situations during the school-day. We share this to inform and not frighten. Our team at Richmond continues to use Active Supervision with students & is great at communicating concerns right away. I see this though as an opportunity to remind us all that, along with Covid-safety, we also all have a lot of physical and social-emotional safety skills to continue teaching-into with our children in this time of mass-trauma and re-socialization in a recovering world.
My shout out this week is for our Campus Neighbors! In our first car incident, we simultaneously received a walkie-call from staff and a telephone call from a neighbor making sure students were safe. As a 100% lottery-seated school, we have fewer families that live nearby. So when families are here, I hope we’ll show our care for the neighborhood community through conscious kindness: trash pick-up, no idling, safe traffic flow (ideally north on 41st and south on 42nd,) and never blocking driveways. Park & walk is the ideal for spreading out congestion at peak times. We’re looking forward to being able to start our upper grades student Safety Patrol soon, but of course kiddos can’t actually direct traffic - and we wouldn’t want them to! So, I’m sure we’ll all do our part. As always THANK YOU, ありがとうございます, Arigatōgozaimasu to everyone working to make school work; we’ve got this, because we’ve got each other!!
All best, Be Well, and Let’s Take Care of Each Other,

Please continue to reference the Richmond TAG page, pps.net/tag or contact Richmond's TAG facilitator, Katia Fleischman, if you have any questions.
UPDATE ON ATTENDANCE If your student is absent from school for any reason, please call the attendance line at 503-916-6220 X 66148 to let us know. You may also email Kirstin at kyamakawa@pps.net. Students who arrive late due to the Bus challenges have a special attendance code that is Bus Late. ALSO, not exactly attendance, but Day Of Dismissal Plan changes are very difficult to manage if they come in after 10AM. Thank you!!

COVID-SAFETY REMINDERS
- Please remember to conduct your FAMILY DAILY ILLNESS SCREENING at home each morning - we are partners in keeping our community as safe as we can!- OHSU Covid Screening - We sent home this letter and packet with kiddos last week. We are processing forms as fast as we can and expect that OHSU is also working as quickly as they can to create the patient accounts so we can move forward with the delivery & distribution of kits to students to bring home. The Richmond PTA also presented these slides last week to help our community better understand the program. If you need another paper copy of the packet to return Consent Forms, please email Kirstin in the office at kyamakawa@pps.net to request one be sent home with your child. We look forward to possibly expanding our Essential Volunteer opportunities in a variety of ways and may need help with kit distribution, so keep your eyes on the PTA Sign Up - maybe even bookmark it : )

Harvest Festival- CARnival Save the date for the Harvest Festival + volunteer opportunity!
The PTA hopes your family can attend the annual Harvest Festival happening on Saturday, October 23 from 2:00–4:00PM in the parking lot of Central Christian Church at 1844 SE Cesar Estrada Chavez Blvd. Please save the date!
Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to help with a different format for the festival that will be equal parts socially distanced and fun. In lieu of the traditional booths we are planning a Harvest CARnival. Here's how it will work:
We are looking for about 20 volunteer families/groups to decorate the trunks of their cars, creating stations that families can visit for treats, socially distanced games and fun. Google ‘Trunk or Treat’ for ideas.
The cars will be parked in a common lot creating a carnival of fun that small groups can visit by foot.
The CARnival will be held on Saturday, October 23 from 2:00–4:00PM, in the parking lot of Central Christian Church at 1844 SE Cesar Estrada Chavez Blvd. In addition to the volunteer supplied stations, the PTA will provide additional treats and games. Costumes are encouraged for all!
The parking lot will be available to volunteers from 1:00–5:00PM for station setup/breakdown. Car decorations and any treats associated with the station will be organized and supplied by volunteers.
We are recommending harvest themed stations and snacks and goodies like stickers instead of candy. Please note that restrooms will not be available so please plan accordingly!
Interested in volunteering? Please sign up here! If you have any questions please reach out to richmondvirtualevents@gmail.com.

Richmond PTA focuses on Equity In this section the Equity committee will share and introduce language related to our equity work both in English and Japanese. This will allow us to learn, use common language and create an opportunity to discuss equity related topics, allowing us to collectively grow as a school community.
