    Dear Rieke Rocket community,

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and acceptance as we, Team Rieke, continue to both adapt to and react to the changes asked of us during this crisis.

Also, on the good news front, check out this beautifully written piece by Rieke (and Gray) parent Shelby Oppel Wood about the Rieke parade. It has now been published by the USA Today. https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/news/nation/2020/05/07/coronavirus-lockdown-perfect-teacher-appreciation-parade/5176674002/

There are some very big changes at PPS and Rieke as we enter the second week of May. PPS has now closed on Fridays for the remainder of the school year. Employees have been partially furloughed in order to allow the district to access state and federal COVID related financial relief. In doing so, PPS helps preserve more funding dollars for 2020-21 school year, preserving jobs and lessening the impending financial impact of this crisis. In its most immediate sense, this means the school week is only four days long, Monday through Thursday.

In addition, the Rieke parking lot paving project has started. The entry from Vermont St into the Rieke parking lot will be fenced off until completion near the end of June. As a result, the childcare provided by Champions for children of first responders is moving from Rieke to Capitol Hill. We are grateful to have hosted this important service and wish the Champions staff all good health as they continue their essential work. While this may offer us at Rieke some more access to the Rieke building, for the most part we have now exited the building for the year.

    March 13, 2020

    Dear Rieke Rocket community,

Well, what a Friday the 13th this is. All schools in the state of Oregon have been cancelled after today until the 1st of April. PPS is calling this an extended spring break. I know the hardships this can cause many of us as parents and students! Not only is school cancelled until 4/1, all assemblies, field trips, after school activities and volunteering is on hold for 30 days. Champions is closed March 16th until students return.

As information continues to come in from the governor and PPS we are trying to synthesize and share the information in as clear a manner as possible. In my 29 years in education I have never been a part of such a situation and I ask you to remain calm, check for district wide communication, and make plans that best support your own families, children and friends and neighbors. The Rieke community continues to amaze with its strength, vigilance, compassion, and spirit of giving and compassion. I believe that it is this core strength in the The Rieke Way that will help us weather this storm.

The Foundation and auction chairs are collaborating with Team Rieke, the venue and other needed service partners to try and reschedule our auction. Like many of you, I was very excited for this great event to build upon our successes this year! But perhaps more time will only strengthen our resolve and results. Thank you to all the volunteers who put in so much hard work to prepare for this event!

PPS is working on contingency plans regarding curriculum should the cancellation extends. At this time we are asking our teachers to keep their focus on teaching and learning in the classroom today. Some teachers may have some materials to go home for the week, but it is not an expectation. PPS sent us the attached pdf for all students. We have copied it and teachers will put it in backpacks today. It is attached if you do not get it or it comes home “slightly” crumpled.

Scholastic has developed Scholastic Learn at Home online resources, designed to meet the needs of all of our K-12 students who are now prevented from attending their school campus environments for an indefinite period of time.  This free resource provides all students 20* days’ worth of learning journeys that span the content areas so you can keep your students academically active while your buildings are closed.

I will miss you and your fantastic children during this extended break. I wish you all the best of health during these challenging times.

    Warmly,

    Jon Jeans
