Bond update: Water fountains back on at more schools, work continuing at Grant
11/17/2017PPS Bond project work is continuing on many fronts.
Water quality teams have replaced water fixtures in the first group of 15 schools and are now retesting the water for each school. When the water test results show that the quality of the water coming from the drinking faucets is better than the EPA recommendations for schools they are turned back on. The water is now flowing again at Astor, Chapman, Hayhurst, Richmond, Sacajawea, Skyline, Woodstock and West Sylvan.
Testing is underway at Beverly Cleary/Fernwood, Chief Joseph, and Rose City Park. The water quality team anticipates that these schools will soon be able to use their drinking fountains again. Work on replacing the drinking fixtures in next group of 15 schools will commence in December.

This does not include in-room facets that will be replaced later as part of the ADA work the district will be doing. If the school needs the more extensive fixes beyond fixture replacement described above, that work would have to be scheduled separately due to the construction impact on the school.
The transformation of Grant High School is accelerating as the main gym building was demolished this past week. At the same time, interior demolition and abatement continues in the main building and excavation is underway for the foundation of the new gym. The original 1920s gym will remain and is being renovated to become the new arts complex. Grant is scheduled to reopen at the start of the 2019-20 school year.
Planning for the modernization of Madison High School and the rebuilding of Kellogg Middle School is now underway. Citizen focused, Design Advisory Groups (DAGs) have been formed at each school and the Kellogg DAG has met several times. These groups represent the ongoing commitment to significant community engagement and input, which remains a priority as we rebuild our schools. The advisory groups and upcoming Public Design Workshops offer students and school communities the opportunity to provide value input for the designs of our new and modernized schools.
