Transportation: How your student can get to school
9/17/2018The first step toward your children getting an education is getting them to school. In Portland Public Schools, there are a number of options.
Yellow bus: We offer yellow bus service for students in pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. There are distance and safety criteria for who gets to ride. There is no charge for students who are eligible to ride.
The Student Transportation department has a web tool to help families determine if their students are eligible to ride a yellow bus, and to find where the stops are. The department also maintains a bus schedule with approximate times that a bus should be at each stop. There is also a schedule for inclement weather and snow routes.
Also, families of pre-K and kindergarten students should be aware of a new PPS rule requiring that those students be met at their stops at the end of the school day, and that they have a district-issued yellow tag affixed to their backpacks. Read more about the rule.
For high school students: PPS does not provide yellow bus service for high school students. However, the TriMet YouthPass Program provides rides at no cost to high school students, thanks to a partnership between TriMet and PPS. Students can ride buses and trains for free during the school year by showing their student IDs. Information on bus and train lines is available on the TriMet website.
Or just hoof or pedal it: If you live close enough to campus and the streets make it safe to do so, students can most certainly walk or ride their bikes to school. One thing that should make doing so safer: the city’s passage of a law that reduces the speed limit in residential areas, including school zones, to 20 mph.
One good way to get started walking and riding is coming up. This year, International Walk & Roll to School day is Wednesday, Oct. 10. Schools can order prizes for participation through the Portland Bureau of Transportation. To see what last year’s day was like, check out a video of the 2017 event.
