Middle schools: Progress report
3/13/2018The District is opening new middle schools at Roseway Heights and Harriet Tubman as part of an effort to offer more equitable middle grades education in those communities. This is a large and complex task that involves dozens of PPS schools, programs and departments. A look at the progress:
Roseway Heights Middle School
- IRCO provided transportation to Somali families to tour the school.
- Staff attended a meeting for families at the Broadway Vantage housing complex to answer their questions about the conversion to a middle school from a K-8.
- On Tuesday, March 13, staff attended a meeting at the Rosewood Community Association to discuss the middle school progress.
- The next community meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14, to discuss “Building a Culture of Learning and Respect.” Tours of the building begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a meeting at 7 p.m.
- A new web page has been set up, which includes calendar, frequently asked questions and staffing chart.
- The school has a new temporary logo incorporating all the feeder schools.
Harriet Tubman
- Community meeting to be held Thursday, March 15 at Boise-Eliot/Humboldt. Participants will have the opportunity to provide input on culturally relevant education.
- Work is underway on developing a separate website for the school
- The school has a new temporary logo, featuring a portrait of Harriet Tubman.
- Families and staff received updates on bus transportation and walking routes from the feeder schools.
ACCESS Academy
- About 30 people attended a community meeting on March 7.
- Representatives from transportation and child care services gave presentations on how those services will be provided in the new facility at Holladay-Youngson.
Pioneer Special School Program
- A community meeting was held March 1 to discuss plans to move the program to Applegate and Rice schools.
- At the recommendation of some staff, the district is looking at a potential third site at the Columbia building.
- A conditional use permit hearing on Rice is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15 for the Rose City Park Neighborhood Association. Location: Head Start at Owen Blank School, 909 NE 52nd, Portland, 97213.
- A meeting for parents has been scheduled for Monday, March 19, 6 p.m., at Pioneer. Food and childcare will be available.
