PPS Pulse: February 12, 2019
2/12/2019In this week's PPS Pulse: Deadline coming for students to be immunized; Jefferson students discuss Black History Month
PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS | FEBRUARY 12, 2019 Español | Tiếng Việt | 中文 | Русский | Soomaali Key date for immunizations is coming up
The recent outbreak of measles serves as a reminder about immunizations, with an important deadline coming up.
Students in Portland Public Schools who have not gotten all of their required immunizations face a Wednesday, Feb. 20 deadline. That is the “exclusion date” set by the state for 2019, when any student who is not fully immunized may be barred from attending classes or district-provided child care.
Next week's Pulse comes out on Wednesday. Due to the upcoming Presidents Day holiday, next week’s Pulse will be published a day later than normal and will be sent out on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Operation Warm gives winter coats to all students at Cesar Chavez
Just as the cold and snow envelope Portland, all 554 students at Cesar Chavez School are bundled up in brand new coats. Operation Warm donated the coats after University of Portland student Itzel Moreno-Vega noticed many children without coats at recess. She, with the help of the Latino Network and the Sun program, made arrangements through Operation Warm to bring new coats to every student at Chavez. Since 1998 Operation Warm has gifted over 3 million coats to children in need. Any PPS students who need winter clothing can also turn to the PTA Clothing Closet at the Marshall High School campus. Jefferson students reflect on importance of their Black Student Union
Members of Jefferson High School’s Black Student Union share what Black History Month means to them. They spoke about their heroes, their inspirations and how Black History is “alive” (still being written). They also spoke about why BSUs are important – providing community, a safe space and shared experience.
PPS Families: Help us improve school culture and climate by taking our Successful Schools Survey
If you are the parent or guardian of a Portland Public Schools student, ask yourself: How is the educational climate at the school? Portland Public Schools is looking for answers to this and other key questions from family members of PPS students as part of the Successful Schools Survey. Students in grades 5, 7 and 10 also are being surveyed, and school-based staff will participate starting Feb. 19.
When inclement weather hits, here’s how we keep you updated
The long-range weather forecast for Portland called for a mild winter, but if you’ve been in Portland for any length of time, you know forecasts can be, well, only so accurate. If you have students in Portland Public Schools, please get to know the ways we inform you when weather forces closures and delays.
