    School News to Know
A huge thank you to all who were able to make it to Back to School Night last night. We loved your energy and appreciate your feedback. In our general sessions, we talked about what we believe as a school. Here’s an article from the New York Times magazine that we used to launch the school year in our professional staff development. The article encapsulates what we did not learn as students, and unless we learn it and teach it now, we can’t expect to change the status quo. Our hope for future school messengers, is to include a link to articles or resources that compliment what we’re learning as a school. Please feel free to send readings or resources our way.
Please see the message below from our PTSA about the next general meeting:
    • PTSA General Meeting
      October 2, 6:30-8pm
      Sunnyside Auditorium
Please come to our first PTSA General Meeting of the school year. All are welcome! At this meeting we will be screening the documentary Priced Out: 15 Years of Gentrification in Portland, Oregon (click the link for the trailer). The film is about 60 minutes long and is appropriate for 4th grade and up. We will have free child care for the littles or any kiddos who are not interested in watching the film. Please email corbywatkins@gmail.com to rsvp for childcare.

We will also have snacks for all.

We hope you can join us to learn a little about the PTSA and watch this documentary about our city: https://www.pricedoutmovie.com/
    Thank you,
    Amy and Alix

    Gender Diversity Support Guide (NEW)
In order to create a shared understanding about the ways in which the school will support transgender, nonbinary and gender diverse students, the district has created this toolkit for school accommodations and considerations. The Administrative Directive for Transgender, Nonbinary and Gender Diverse Students, PPS School Planning materials and the Student FAQ documents are meant to serve as resources to help ensure ALL students have the right to a safe, accepting, and healthy learning environment.
Garden Day Sunday, October 6, 9:00-1:00 (NEW)
For a few hours each Fall and Spring, Sunnyside families come together to take care of the school grounds on what we call GARDEN DAY. The productivity we can accomplish during this short amount of time is incredible if people show up! Drop by and work for however long you can between 9:00am-1:00pm. Projects that require adult-sized bodies, brains, and tools will be the priority. There will also be small tools and smaller jobs for young people. Please do not drop off your student, there will not be supervision- this is a community event, we encourage you to come as a family or together in chaperoned groups.
For more information on Garden Day, please visit our Garden Day Event Post or contact SES Garden Coordinator Steph at sunnysidesustainability@gmail.com.
New Volunteer & Visitor Sign In System (NEW)
PPS is introducing a new volunteer and visitor sign-in system called Raptor. Volunteers/ Visitors must bring a government issued photo ID to sign into the online system which verifies that a background check has been completed. The first time you use the system, Michelle or Sarah at the front office will assist. In future visits you will be able to sign in on your own at a laptop on the front counter.
Due to our wonderfully active and large volunteer network, there may be days where first time sign-in will be busy (Field Study days!). Therefore, we highly encourage volunteers to submit their background check then come in when convenient to be registered with the Raptor system.
Back to School Night Slideshow Presentations (NEW)
Find presentations from back-to-school night online. The K-5 presentation is here, and the middle school presentation here.
Spoons and Forks for Our Cafeteria (NEW)
Christina Wolfe, our wonderful Nutrition Services manager, is in need of silverware for our cafeteria- specifically spoons (forks also welcome, but please no butter knives). By providing our cafeteria with silverware, you are helping us build a more sustainable school that depends less on plastics.
    Class Photo Fundraiser
We have a professional photographer coming to take class photos on Wednesday, September 25th. Families are welcome to issue payment using the following SchoolPay link(s) or by bringing cash or check to the school office. The best part ~ ALL PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT SUNNYSIDE'S GO FUND!
For information on ordering individual photos, please visit Mugsy Clicks' Student Photo Info Page.
    Community Collaboration (NEW)
Please check here for new information regarding community collaboration or events!
    • Race Matters: A Community Dialogue
Please join us at Taborspace on SE Belmont on 10/10/19 to build skills and create a welcoming space for everyone to speak openly about the role of race in our and our children’s lives. Now, more than ever, we need to be a community that recognizes that systemic racism affects each of us differently, depending on our racial identity; that sees, welcomes, and responds to each of our children for who they are; and that celebrates the diversity of experiences and perspectives that each family brings.
Sponsored by Glencoe Elementary School and Mt Tabor Middle School PTAs. Free childcare and pizza dinner available upon request: munirahenry@gmail.com

    • SES's Annual Harvest Fair Needs You! (NEW)
One of Sunnyside's most favorite traditions is right around the corner: The Harvest Fair! Our annual celebration of Autumn is on Saturday, October 26, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. All community members welcome. We need everyone to pitch in! There are 100+ volunteer slots! From carnival helpers and ticket takers to helping with the dunk tank or dishwashing, or MCing the boogie, there is a job for you - this one takes all of us. Learn more and check out this detailed Sign Up Form to volunteer now for your favorite job.

We also need: URGENT Community Meal Coordinator(s). Our friends at Beeswing - who have generously coordinated the meal for several years - are busy in transition between buildings this fall. So: we need a new team to step up and manage this awesome community dinner. Do you have access to a commissary kitchen? A passion for cooking? A heart for adventure? Please text or call Steph (503-807-9733) right away to talk about how you can be this year's Harvest Fair meal hero.

We also need: Small Toy Donations. The Hay Bales of Mystery and Carnival need a fresh supply of small toys that are no longer getting love in your homes. Tiny action figures your crew doesn't play with any more? Happy Meal prizes long forgotten? Send 'em our way, to the collection bin in the main office by Friday, October 25 at 5:00 p.m.

Baked Goods Donations. Calling ALL bakers, novice and pro alike! We need many treats of all kinds for the Baked Goodies Boogie (MCed by Sunnyside Personalities TBA) and the Magical Cookie Palace. Deliver your baked wares on Friday, October 25 by 5:00 p.m., or on Saturday, October 26 between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. to the Auditorium. If you bring them on a tray you would like back, please mark clearly with your name. Allergy-friendly options desired.
