SES Messenger for October 18 2019
10/18/2019Inside this Issue:To our Sunnyside families and community,Next week is a big one at Sunnyside! On Friday, October 25th, students will participate in the annual SES Run/Walk/Move. This PTSA fundraiser is an annual tradition, one that raises $10K+ for a variety of programs here at school. Thank you to all of the adults—staff and volunteers—who have volunteered to cheer on students, tally laps and number of dance minutes, and, as always, for your commitment of time and money and for sponsoring students in generous support of SES.In addition to the Run/Walk/Move, we are also planning for next Saturday’s Harvest Fair, a curriculum showcase and community event from 4 pm-7 pm. Harvest Fair is also a long standing Sunnyside tradition, one where we are together as a community, celebrating our school, our students and our extended “family.” This event on 10/26 features a 1st-2nd grade curriculum showcase, a magical cookie palace, a carnival with games run by our middle school students, arts and crafts, a dunk tank, a cake walk, an old-fashioned cider press, and an array of delicious food. This is truly a community event, and it would not be possible without the collaborative hard work of the community coming together in preparation. THANK YOU! We hope you can attend next weekend!Thank you SES community. We are grateful and happy. We are busy. And, we are grateful and happy.—Amy and AlixUpcoming DatesCheck the district online calendar here.Friday, October 25 Run/Walk/Move Fundraiser Saturday, October 26 Harvest Fair, 4:00 - 7:00 Tuesday, October 29 School Photo Make Up Day Friday, November 1 End of Quarter 1 Planning Day (no school) Monday, November 10 Veterans Day (no school) Wednesday, November 20 PTSA Board Meeting

Please click here to learn more about the work our amazing counselors are doing!Oregon’s public schools will soon receive a major infusion of funding from the state, and Portland Public Schools wants to hear from our community about your thoughts on the Student Success Act. The infusion of funding will help PPS begin the transformative work to fulfill the long-term vision for the district identified through a comprehensive, community-oriented Visioning process. The PPS Vision describes our goals for the graduating class of 2030, and the educational experience that will increasingly be the reality for each of our graduates from 2019 onward. Please see the Student Success Act webpage to learn more about the areas the funding is intended to address. For information on upcoming Student Success Act meetings, please see the Student Success Act Info Flyer. To give the district feedback, please take the Student Success Act Survey. Here’s an article we read last year with staff and about author Kiese Laymon. Many of us read his book, Heavy and the author visited Sunnyside, as well. One of our wonderful volunteers helped sort the Lost & Found this week. During this great cleanup, she discovered over 100 hoodies and jackets! There are also books, lunchboxes, and other found items. Please check the Lost & Found, located under the 3/4/5 stairwell (between room 102 and 103) to see if one of these items is yours. The Lost & Found is periodically donated to the PPS Clothing Closet so be sure to check for items soon after they are lost.PPS safety protocols require us to practice monthly safety drills. We’ve already practiced two fire drills and one earthquake drill. On October 30, we will practice our first lockdown drill which requires students and staff to follow the prompt: “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight”. This means that staff and students remain behind locked doors, turn off lights and gather in a corner, quietly. While our staff does a phenomenal job describing the reasons for the drill for their specific grade level, this may bring up feelings for some students.School Photo Make Up DayPhotographers will return Tuesday, October 29 for individual photo make ups. Students who were absent will be automatically registered to take their photos. If your family is interested in retakes (photo was already taken but you would like to take them again) there is a $10 charge to be paid to Mugsy Clicks. The new process for any parent wanting to request a remake is:- Log onto Mugsyclicks.com—Enter access code as required.
- View photos: order photos or retakes in gallery.
This option will be available until 10/26 at which point Mugsy Clicks will turn off the online request option.
And check back often for updates! How to Communicate To the School via the PTSAWe have three types of information that are sent out to parents and students at SES: 1) School related matters; 2) PTSA events, meetings, calls for volunteers; and 3) community events. This year, we’ve had a change in how messages are being sent out. The school’s office is sending out a weekly message that will primarily have information about the school. This newsletter will also have some information about PTSA events with a link to the PTSA website. This is not a newsletter for community events. For PTSA volunteers who want to get messages out and for others who are requesting community events, please follow these steps to request a message to be posted:- Go to the PTSA website here: https://www.sesptsa.org/communications/contact-the-ses-ptsa/.
- On that page, fill out the form.
- On the drop down menu entitled: “Who would you like to receive your message? * “ select Website/communications.
- Your request will then be forwarded to the communications team who will post the message on the SES PTSA website and social media, and forward to room parents.
The office might choose to post a PTSA event in the weekly email, but not all. We need to encourage people to go to the PTSA website at www.sesptsa.org for the most up-to-date information. You can also post a message on the PTSA Facebook page yourself.- Run/Walk/Move
We are excited to announce the annual SES Run/Walk/Move event on Friday, October 25, 2019. This school-wide fundraising event is organized by the SES PTSA and family volunteers with collaboration and support from school staff. SES Run Walk Move is similar to a traditional jog-a-thon where participants gather pledges from sponsors and run or walk laps around the school. At SES, our participants can also earn “laps” by dancing with a NW Dance Project instructor. Pledges may be made as lump sums or per lap. The idea is for families and others to support the students in any way they can, be it in dimes, dollars, running along side your student, or cheering. The money raised from this event goes towards funding the SES place-based-learning curriculum and events. Last year this fun-filled event raised over $12,000 for our school!
For more information and a link to the pledge sheets, please visit the SES PTSA Monthly Info Post. - Little big Mondays with Renata
